Role Description
We are looking for a Senior Design Engineer with expertise in ruggedized electronics packaging to lead mechanical design efforts for high-reliability products operating in harsh environments (military, aerospace, industrial). The ideal candidate will have deep experience in designing enclosures and thermal management systems that ensure protection against vibration, shock, dust, water, and extreme temperatures.
Desired Experience
- Lead the design and development of ruggedized enclosures and packaging for electronics, PCBs, connectors, and interface components.
- Define mechanical and thermal architecture to ensure environmental protection (IP/NEMA ratings, MIL-STD-810, DO-160, MIL-STD-461 etc.).
- Conduct structural and thermal analysis using FEA/CFD tools (e.g., Floefd Simulation).
- Drive material selection for corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, weight optimization, and cost-effectiveness (e.g., Al 6061, stainless steel, thermal pads, gaskets).
- Collaborate with electrical and PCB teams to ensure mechanical-electrical integration.
- Support testing and validation for shock, vibration, drop, ingress protection, and thermal cycling.
- Prepare and review engineering drawings per ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Work with manufacturing and suppliers on DFM/DFA, tolerances, machining, welding, sheet metal processes.
- Generate design documentation, BOMs, test plans, and ECOs.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical direction within the mechanical team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, with at least 2-3 years in ruggedized electronics packaging.
- Proficient in CAD tools (Creo) and simulation tools (Floefd).
- Hands-on experience with MIL-STD-810, IP/NEMA ratings, and EMI/EMC considerations in mechanical design.
- Strong knowledge of sealing techniques, shock mounts, heat sinks, thermal interface materials, and vibration isolation.
- Familiar with design for manufacturability and working with sheet metal, welding, and CNC processes.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
