Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Design Engineer to join our transformer manufacturing division. The candidate will be responsible for the mechanical design and development of power and distribution transformers, including tank design, structural components, cooling arrangements, and associated mechanical accessories. The role requires close coordination with electrical design, production, procurement, and quality assurance teams to ensure robust, cost-effective, and manufacturable designs.
Key Responsibilities :Mechanical Design & Development
- Design transformer tanks, radiators, conservators, marshalling boxes, and supporting structures.
- Prepare General Arrangement (GA) drawings, fabrication drawings, and assembly drawings.
- Design and validate lifting lugs, jacking pads, wheel arrangements, and structural supports.
- Develop cooling systems, including ONAN, ONAF, OFAF, and other configurations.
- Calculate material requirements and prepare Bills of Materials (BOM).
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications and applicable standards.
Engineering Calculations
- Perform mechanical calculations for:
- Tank pressure and vacuum withstand capability
- Structural stress and deflection
- Lifting and transportation loads
- Short-circuit mechanical forces
- Seismic and wind loads (where applicable)
- Optimize designs for weight reduction and cost efficiency.
Standards & Compliance
- Ensure designs conform to:
- Bureau of Indian Standards (IS)
- International Electrotechnical Commission
- Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
- Customer and utility specifications
- Maintain design documentation and revision control.
CAD & Documentation
- Create 2D and 3D models using software such as:
- AutoCAD
- SolidWorks
- Autodesk Inventor
- PTC Creo
- Generate DXF files for CNC cutting and fabrication.
- Prepare design reports and technical documentation.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate with electrical design engineers for active part integration.
- Support production during fabrication and assembly.
- Work with procurement to identify suitable materials and vendors.
- Assist quality assurance in resolving design-related non-conformities.
- Provide technical support to marketing and project teams.
Continuous Improvement
- Standardize design templates and libraries.
- Reduce material costs through value engineering.
- Improve manufacturability and assembly efficiency.
Educational Qualification
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience Required
- 3 to 10 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in transformer manufacturing.
- Experience in designing distribution transformers, power transformers, or special transformers is preferred.
- Freshers can also apply.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of sheet metal and structural design.
- Familiarity with transformer accessories and cooling systems.
- Expertise in engineering calculations and material selection.
- Proficiency in CAD software.
- Understanding of fabrication, welding, and machining processes.
- Knowledge of standards such as IS, IEC, and IEEE.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
