The Perfusionist is responsible for operating and managing the heart-lung machine and other extracorporeal circulation equipment during cardiac surgeries and related procedures. The role involves ensuring adequate circulation, oxygenation, and patient safety throughout surgical procedures while collaborating closely with cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, and OT staff.
- Operate and monitor the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine during open-heart surgeries.
- Prepare, prime, and maintain heart-lung machines and associated perfusion equipment before surgical procedures.
- Monitor and manage blood flow, oxygenation, temperature, anticoagulation, and other physiological parameters during bypass.
- Perform intraoperative blood conservation techniques, including autotransfusion and cell saver operations.
- Assist in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) initiation, monitoring, and management when required.
- Ensure proper functioning, calibration, and maintenance of perfusion equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of perfusion parameters and procedural documentation.
- Coordinate with cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and biomedical teams during procedures.
- Participate in emergency cardiac procedures and transplant surgeries as required.
- Maintain adequate inventory of perfusion disposables and consumables.
- Follow infection control practices, safety protocols, and quality standards.
- Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement initiatives, and training programs.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, NABH standards, and statutory requirements.
- B.Sc. Perfusion Technology / Bachelor of Perfusion Technology (BPT).
- Master's Degree in Perfusion Technology is an added advantage.
- Valid registration/certification as applicable under local regulations.
