Technical Expert: Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
The energy transition demands bold expertise and deep commitment. At ENGIE, we are building a cleaner, more resilient energy future — and battery storage is at the heart of that transformation. We need specialists who can push the boundaries of what's possible with utility-scale energy storage.
As a Technical Expert for BESS within our Global Maintenance Services team, you will be the go-to authority for diagnostics, performance optimization, and reliability of large-scale battery systems. Your work will directly impact how we store, dispatch, and manage renewable energy across the Asia-Middle East-Africa region.
What You'll Do
- Lead advanced fault diagnostics across cell, module, rack, PCS, BMS, and system levels for stand-alone and hybrid BESS assets.
- Conduct battery testing including cycle testing, capacity assessments, impedance spectroscopy, and degradation profiling on Li-ion chemistries (LFP, NMC, NCA, LTO).
- Perform root cause analysis for thermal events, cell imbalance, PCS failures, and accelerated degradation — delivering actionable corrective recommendations.
- Evaluate hybrid system interactions involving solar/wind inverters, MPPT controllers, and grid-forming equipment to optimize renewable firming and smoothing.
- Support warranty validation, insurance claims, and lifecycle decisions using SOH data, event logs, and cycle count evidence.
- Define spare parts strategies and collaborate with OEMs on firmware updates, design corrections, and component quality improvements.
- Develop standardized operating procedures for diagnostics, safety protocols, and compliance with IEEE, IEC, and UL standards.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or Energy Storage.
- 8 to 10 years of hands-on experience with utility-scale BESS projects.
- Deep expertise in battery technology, degradation mechanisms, and safety engineering.
- Strong knowledge of PCS troubleshooting, BMS algorithms (SOC/SOH), and EMS/PMS control systems.
- Proven ability to lead RCA investigations and engage with OEM engineering teams.
- Experience with SCADA-based monitoring, predictive diagnostics, and life-extension strategies.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across engineering, digital, and asset management teams.
Location
Pune, India. This role is based within the Global Maintenance Services (GMS) AMEA team. Travel to project sites may be required to support commissioning, breakdowns, and critical maintenance activities.
What We Offer
- A competitive salary package aligned with your senior-level expertise and the energy storage market.
- A career path with real growth potential within a global energy leader operating across 30+ countries.
- Diverse and stimulating missions — from cutting-edge hybrid systems to large-scale grid storage projects.
- A collaborative, friendly work environment where technical excellence is valued and recognized.
- Flexibility and work-life balance supported by a culture that respects personal well-being.
- The opportunity to shape industry best practices in one of the fastest-growing segments of the energy transition.
