Job Description – Assistant Manager - CHA Import Documentation (Checker)
Company Name: Nagarkot Forwarders Pvt. Ltd.
Location: Chembur, Mumbai
Designation: Assistant Manager – CHA Import Documentation (Checker)
Experience: Minimum 7 years
Salary: As per industry standards
Key Responsibilities:
- HS code verification - Cross-check the maker's classification against the product description, invoice, and packing list. Verify at the correct 8-digit level using CTH structure and GRI rules. Flag any code that does not precisely match the product.
- Exemption notification verification - Confirm any applied notification is current and not superseded. Verify the product actually qualifies under the notification's specific conditions - end-use, origin, supporting documents. This is the highest liability point in any import file.
- Valuation check - Verify CIF calculation, landing charges, and exchange rate. Flag invoice values that appear unusually low relative to product type or origin country.
- Regulatory document completeness - Confirm all required documents are present and valid: BIS, FSSAI, CDSCO, PQ, SIMS as applicable. Check expiry, quantity scope, issuing authority, and name match with the IEC holder. Presence of a document is not the same as its validity.
- Data accuracy - Verify IEC number, AD Code, importer name, ports, container number, and seal number against source documents. Zero-tolerance standard -one wrong digit causes a filing rejection.
- Notification currency - Maintain active awareness of DGFT notifications and customs circulars. Identify when a maker has applied an outdated notification or missed a recent amendment.
Error logging - When an error is found: correct it, return it to the maker with a specific one-line explanation, and log it in the shared error tracker. The log entry should take under 60 seconds. This is how maker accuracy rates are tracked over time.
What we are looking for:
- Min. 7 years of hands-on import customs clearance experience. Must have personally filed Bills of Entry - not assisted. Must be able to recall and describe at least one significant compliance issue they caught or resolved, with specific details.
- On the knowledge side: GRI Rules 1 through 6, exemption notification reading and interpretation, BIS/FSSAI/CDSCO document verification, GATT valuation methods, and current ICEGATE/e-Sanchit process. This role requires stronger regulatory depth than the executives whose work is being reviewed - not equal.
- On the character side: comfortable holding a shipment when the file is not ready, regardless of deadline pressure from operations. Does not defer to the maker's judgment when something looks wrong. Communicates corrections clearly and specifically - without blame, but without softening the message either.
- Graduate in any discipline (Logistics / Supply Chain preferred). Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in import documentation.
