Role OverviewEngagement type: Consulting role, contract basis Seniority: Experienced UI/UX designer Location: Remote Domain: Virtual / remote patient care (digital health) Commitment: Flexible (part-time or project-based; scope agreed upfront)
About the role
This is a consulting engagement on a contract basis for an experienced UI/UX designer. You’ll help shape the experience of our mobile healthcare products — patient- and provider-facing apps in the virtual care space that need to feel calm, trustworthy, and effortless even when the underlying clinical workflows are complex. It’s a hands-on role: you’ll move from problem framing through to high-fidelity, build-ready designs, partnering closely with product and engineering, and we expect you to bring the judgment that comes from having shipped real products before.
The majority of our users are senior citizens. Designing for this audience is central to the role, not an afterthought. We need someone who instinctively designs for older adults — larger touch targets and type, high contrast, plain language, generous spacing, forgiving error handling, minimal cognitive load, and flows that work for people with limited tech familiarity or with vision, dexterity, or memory challenges. Every design decision should be made with this user in mind.
Because the work touches protected health information, you’ll also be designing within a HIPAA-aware environment where clarity, accessibility, and error prevention aren’t nice-to-haves — they directly affect patient safety and care quality.
What you’ll do
- Lead end-to-end design for mobile app features — from user flows and wireframes to polished, production-ready UI.
- Translate clinical and operational requirements into intuitive experiences for patients, caregivers, and care teams.
- Design for the realities of remote care: onboarding, remote monitoring data, care-coach interactions, messaging, scheduling, medication and adherence flows, and consent.
- Build and maintain reusable components and contribute to a coherent design system.
- Create interactive prototypes to validate ideas and align stakeholders before build.
- Partner with engineering to ensure designs ship faithfully, and iterate based on real-world usage and feedback.
- Apply accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design principles, with a primary focus on older adults — accommodating low digital literacy, reduced vision and dexterity, and users managing chronic conditions.
- Pressure-test every flow against the needs of a senior user: can someone in their 70s or 80s, unfamiliar with apps, complete it confidently on the first try?
What we’re looking for
Required
- Senior-level, demonstrable experience designing mobile apps (iOS and Android patterns), with a portfolio that shows shipped work.
- A track record of designing for older or non-technical users — or a clear, evidenced understanding of accessibility and age-inclusive design (type scale, contrast, touch targets, plain language, error tolerance).
- Prior experience in the healthcare or digital health domain — ideally remote/virtual care, telehealth, RPM/CCM, or patient engagement products.
- Strong command of a modern design toolset (e.g., Figma), including prototyping and design-system work.
- Solid grounding in interaction design, information architecture, and visual design fundamentals.
- Comfort designing data-dense, workflow-heavy interfaces without sacrificing usability.
- Awareness of healthcare constraints — privacy, consent, accessibility, and the consequences of design error in a clinical context.
- Ability to work independently, manage scope, and communicate clearly in a remote, asynchronous setting.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with HIPAA and designing within compliant environments.
- Experience collaborating directly with clinicians or care teams.
- Some fluency with front-end constraints (what’s cheap vs. expensive to build) to keep designs grounded.
- Experience running lightweight usability testing or research with patients/providers.
How we’ll work together
- You’ll have direct access to product and engineering — minimal layers, fast feedback.
- We value clean, instruction-light deliverables and clear rationale over heavy process.
- Scope and milestones are agreed at the start of each engagement so expectations stay clear on both sides.
How To apply
- Please share your portfolio (with at least one healthcare or mobile case study), a short note on relevant experience, and your availability and consulting rate
