The Scrub Nurse is responsible for assisting surgeons during operative procedures by preparing and handling surgical instruments, maintaining a sterile field, and ensuring patient safety throughout the surgery.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating room before surgery, ensuring all instruments, equipment, and supplies are sterile and ready.
- Assist surgeons by passing instruments, sutures, and other sterile items during procedures.
- Maintain strict aseptic techniques and infection control standards.
- Count surgical instruments, sponges, and needles before and after surgery to ensure patient safety.
- Monitor the sterile field and report any contamination immediately.
- Assist in positioning, draping, and preparing the patient for surgery.
- Handle specimens correctly and send them for laboratory analysis as required.
- Assist in cleaning and sterilizing instruments after procedures.
- Document intra-operative nursing care accurately.
- Coordinate with anesthetists, surgeons, and OT technicians for smooth workflow.
- Respond promptly to emergencies in the operating room.
Qualifications & Requirements
- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing qualification
- Valid Nursing Council Registration
- Experience in Operation Theatre (preferred)
- Knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures
- Strong understanding of aseptic techniques
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work under pressure and long hours
