Core Responsibilities
At this career stage, you are expected to be the "Engineer of Record" for mid-sized projects or a Lead for specific sections of mega-structures.
- System Selection: Determining the most efficient structural system (e.g., flat slab vs. beam-slab for RCC, or portal frame vs. truss for Steel) based on architectural constraints and budget.
- Advanced Modeling: Creating high-fidelity 3D finite element models. For Steel, this includes modeling connections; for RCC, it involves complex shear wall layouts and foundation systems like raft or piled-rafts.
- Seismic & Wind Design: Applying advanced lateral load analysis, including Response Spectrum and Pushover Analysis, ensuring the building meets stringent safety codes.
- Steel Connection Design: Designing moment-resisting, shear, and braced connections, often using specialized software or custom spreadsheets.
- Peer Review: Vetting designs and drawings submitted by junior engineers or external consultants to ensure structural integrity and optimization.
- Interdisciplinary Coordination: Leading "clash detection" meetings with MEP and Architectural teams to ensure structural elements don't interfere with ducts, pipes, or aesthetic finishes.echnical Expertise Requirements
A candidate with 6–7 years of experience must demonstrate mastery in the following areas:
### 1. Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC)
- Expertise in Ductile Detailing (e.g., IS 13920 or ACI 318) for earthquake-resistant structures.
- Design of specialized elements: Transfer girders, flat slabs with drop panels, and water-retaining structures.
- Knowledge of concrete mix design and durability requirements for different environmental exposures.
### 2. Structural Steel
- Design of Industrial Sheds, PEB (Pre-Engineered Buildings), and High-rise Steel frames.
- Proficiency in Limit State Design and understanding of buckling, torsion, and lateral-torsional buckling in steel members.
- Deep understanding of welding standards and bolting configurations (HSFG bolts).
## Software Proficiency Matrix
By this point, you should not only use these tools but also be able to troubleshoot errors in the software’s output.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Education: B.Tech/B.E. in Civil Engineering (Essential); M.Tech/M.E. in Structural Engineering (Highly Preferred).
- Experience: 6–7 years of proven experience specifically in a design consultancy or an EPC firm.
