We are seeking an Accessible XML Specialist to convert, tag, and validate digital content — textbooks, documents, and educational materials — into accessible XML-based formats (EPUB3, DAISY, NIMAS, tagged PDF) that comply with WCAG, Section 508, and PDF/UA standards. The role ensures content is usable by people relying on assistive technologies such as screen readers and refreshable braille displays.
Key Responsibilities:
Convert source files (Word, InDesign, print PDFs) into accessible, well-structured XML/EPUB3/DAISY formats
Tag documents with correct reading order, headings, lists, tables, and alternative text for images and graphics
Author or review MathML for mathematical/scientific content
Validate output against WCAG 2.1/2.2, Section 508, and PDF/UA using tools like Ace by DAISY and PAC
Perform QA testing using screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver) to confirm real-world usability
Write and maintain XSLT transforms for automated conversion pipelines
Collaborate with editorial, design, and engineering teams to resolve accessibility issues at the source
Maintain documentation of remediation standards and style guides
Required Qualifications:
2+ years of experience with XML authoring/editing (oXygen, Arbortext, or similar)
Working knowledge of EPUB3, DAISY, and/or NIMAS specifications
Hands-on experience with WCAG 2.1/2.2 and Section 508 compliance
Familiarity with XSLT/XPath
Experience testing with at least one major screen reader
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in educational or trade publishing
Knowledge of MathML and accessible STEM content
Scripting experience (Python) for QA automation
Certification in accessibility (e.g., CPACC, WAS from IAAP)
Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
