The Automation Technologist/Engineer supports automation and instrumentation design by delivering and reviewing key technical documents such as loop diagrams, P&IDs, and control narratives, while ensuring compliance with industry standards. The role requires strong oil and gas experience, proficiency in SPI tools, and effective coordination across teams to execute projects efficiently and maintain high-quality engineering outcomes.

Perform quality checks and provide design guidance for all 2D/3D CADD drafting and design work.

Prepare and review instrument loop diagrams, control system cabinet designs, and wiring layouts.

Participate in design reviews, HAZOP studies, and ensure compliance with safety and engineering standards.

Develop and verify installation details, instrument layouts, and fire & gas detection plans.

Execute core instrument engineering tasks including selection, specification, and sizing calculations.

Create and maintain SPI deliverables such as instrument index, I/O lists, assignments, and alarm rationalization.

Develop P&IDs, auxiliary diagrams, and prepare detailed instrument data sheets.

Generate material requisitions, conduct technical bid evaluations, and review vendor documentation.

Prepare control narratives and cause & effect diagrams for system functionality and safety logic.

Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, manage assigned tasks, support field activities, and ensure delivery within schedule and budget.

Degree or Diploma in Instrumentation/Control Systems from an accredited University or College.

More than 1-3 years of instrumentation design/Engineering experience in the Oil and Gas Industry.

Expertise using Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) and knowledge of 2D/3D design/drafting .

Proven track record of successful projects.

Highly motivated and organized.

An understanding of Oil sands Safety acts, regulations and codes.

Understanding and familiarity of API, ASME, CSA and ISA codes and directives.

Site experience in construction or commissioning of plant Instrumentation and Control Systems for Alberta Oil and Gas facilities would be considered an asset.

Registration or eligibility for registration through ASET as a C.E.T./P.Tech or APEGA as a P.ENG/P.L. (ENG) would be considered an asset.
