Production Supervisor – Pressure Die Casting: Roles & Responsibilities
A Production Supervisor in a Pressure Die Casting (PDC) plant is responsible for managing daily production activities, ensuring safety, quality, productivity, and efficient utilization of manpower and equipment.
1. Production Planning & Execution
- Execute the daily production plan as per customer requirements.
- Monitor machine-wise production targets and achieve planned output.
- Coordinate with planning, maintenance, quality, and tool room departments.
- Ensure optimum machine utilization and minimize downtime.
2. Manpower Management
- Allocate operators and helpers based on production requirements.
- Conduct shift handovers and daily production meetings.
- Monitor attendance, discipline, and workforce productivity.
- Train operators on machine operation, safety, and quality requirements.
3. Process Control
- Monitor critical die casting parameters such as:
- Metal temperature
- Die temperature
- Injection pressure
- Cycle time
- Cooling time
- Ensure process parameters are maintained as per standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Implement corrective actions for process deviations.
4. Quality Assurance
- Ensure production of components according to specifications.
- Monitor rejection, rework, and scrap levels.
- Conduct root cause analysis for casting defects such as:
- Porosity
- Cold shut
- Blow holes
- Flash
- Shrinkage
- Misrun
- Coordinate with the quality team for corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
5. Machine & Equipment Management
- Ensure proper operation of:
- Cold chamber/hot chamber die casting machines
- Melting furnaces
- Trimming presses
- Shot blasting machines
- Auxiliary equipment
- Coordinate preventive maintenance activities.
- Report machine breakdowns and follow up for quick restoration.
6. Die & Tool Management
- Monitor die performance and die life.
- Ensure proper die setup and changeover activities.
- Coordinate with the tool room for die maintenance and repairs.
- Reduce die changeover time through effective planning.
7. Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Enforce PPE usage and safe work practices.
- Ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations.
- Conduct safety inspections and identify hazards.
- Investigate accidents, near misses, and implement preventive measures.
- Ensure proper handling of molten metal and hazardous materials.
8. Cost & Productivity Improvement
- Reduce casting rejection and material wastage.
- Improve OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).
- Monitor metal yield and process efficiency.
- Participate in Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
- Control production costs while maintaining quality standards.
9. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain production records and shift reports.
- Track KPIs such as:
- Production output
- Rejection percentage
- Machine utilization
- OEE
- Downtime
- Productivity
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly performance reports.
10. Coordination with Other Departments
- Quality: Resolve quality issues and customer complaints.
- Maintenance: Plan preventive and breakdown maintenance.
- Stores: Ensure availability of raw materials and consumables.
- Tool Room: Coordinate die repairs and modifications.
- Logistics: Ensure timely dispatch of finished products.
