Working as a General Technician at an automobile dealership is the engine room of the business. You aren't just "fixing cars"; you’re ensuring safety, maintaining manufacturer standards, and acting as the bridge between complex engineering and customer satisfaction.
Here is a breakdown of the core duties and responsibilities involved in the role.
1. Diagnostic and Repair Tasks
The primary function of a General Technician is to identify and resolve mechanical and electrical issues.
- System Diagnostics: Utilizing specialized scanners and software to identify fault codes in the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
- Mechanical Repairs: Performing work on engines, transmissions, drive trains, and suspension systems.
- Electrical Work: Troubleshooting wiring harnesses, sensors, and infotainment systems.
- Brake and Tire Service: Replacing pads, rotors, and calipers; performing alignments and balancing.
2. Preventative Maintenance
Dealerships rely heavily on scheduled services to keep customer vehicles under warranty and in peak condition.
- Multi-Point Inspections (MPI): Systematically checking fluid levels, belt wear, tire tread depth, and light functionality.
- Fluid Services: Conducting oil changes, coolant flushes, and transmission fluid replacements.
- Recall Compliance: Identifying and performing manufacturer-issued safety recalls or software updates.
3. Documentation and Communication
In a dealership environment, if it isn't documented, it didn't happen.
- Repair Orders (RO): Clearly documenting the "Three Cs": Complaint (the issue), Cause (the diagnosis), and Correction (the fix).
- Parts Coordination: Communicating with the Parts Department to order necessary components efficiently.
- Service Advisor Updates: Providing estimated completion times and explaining complex repairs so the Advisor can relay them to the customer.
4. Quality Control and Safety
- Road Testing: Conducting test drives to verify that the "noise/vibration" is gone and the vehicle is safe for the customer.
- Shop Cleanliness: Maintaining a safe workspace, properly disposing of hazardous materials (oil, batteries), and caring for shop tools.
- Technical Training: Keeping up-to-date with manufacturer-specific certifications and new model features (especially with the rise of EVs and hybrids).
