About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled ICU Intensivist – Labour Ward Specialist to lead the medical management of critically ill antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum patients within our Labour Ward and Obstetric Critical Care Unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for the complete continuum of critical care from admission to discharge, working closely with Obstetricians, Anaesthesiologists, Neonatologists, Nursing teams, and visiting sub-specialists to ensure safe maternal and fetal outcomes. The role demands exceptional clinical judgement, rapid decision-making, multidisciplinary collaboration, and leadership in managing life-threatening obstetric emergencies.

- Zero compromise in patient safety due to ICU coordination failures
- Regular clinical training and competency assessment for Labour Ward nursing staff
- Complete and accurate documentation of all critical care interventions
Key Responsibilities
1. Maternal Critical Care Management
- Assess, stabilise, and manage critically ill pregnant and postpartum patients requiring intensive care
- Develop individualized critical care plans from admission through discharge
- Monitor and manage respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, neurological, and metabolic complications associated with pregnancy
- Perform advanced haemodynamic assessment and optimise organ support therapies
2. Obstetric Emergency Management
- Lead the management of maternal cardiac arrest, severe haemorrhage, septic shock, amniotic fluid embolism, pulmonary embolism, severe pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome
- Participate in emergency obstetric interventions including Perimortem Caesarean Delivery (PMCD) when clinically indicated
- Coordinate rapid response during maternal emergencies and ensure adherence to established obstetric emergency protocols
3. Critical Care Procedures
- Perform advanced airway management including Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI), difficult airway management, video laryngoscopy, and emergency airway stabilisation
- Manage invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation according to maternal physiological requirements
- Insert and manage arterial lines, central venous catheters, and invasive haemodynamic monitoring systems
- Perform and interpret Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) including focused cardiac, lung, and vascular assessments
4. Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Conduct daily joint clinical rounds with Obstetrics & Gynaecology consultants
- Coordinate patient care with Anaesthesiology, Neonatology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Haematology, and other speciality teams
- Participate in multidisciplinary discussions for high-risk pregnancies and emergency operative planning
- Coordinate ICU admissions, OT readiness, and critical care resource allocation
5. Clinical Leadership & Quality
- Supervise Labour Ward critical care protocols and clinical governance activities
- Conduct orientation, training, simulation drills, and competency assessments for Labour Ward nurses and junior doctors
- Participate in NABH quality initiatives, maternal mortality reviews, clinical audits, and continuous quality improvement programmes
- Ensure complete documentation, ICU records, consent processes, and statutory compliance

Qualifications & Preferences
Education: MD / DNB / DM in Critical Care Medicine or Anaesthesiology (Mandatory)
Preferred Qualification: Fellowship or extensive clinical experience in Obstetric Critical Care
Experience: Minimum 5 years post-PG experience in ICU with significant exposure to high-risk obstetric patients
Mandatory Requirements:
- Valid NMC / State Medical Council Registration
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification (Mandatory)
- Experience managing high-risk obstetric ICU patients and multidisciplinary critical care teams
- Strong leadership, communication, and emergency decision-making skills
Preferred Requirements:
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification
- Experience in simulation-based clinical education and staff training
- Experience with Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and ICU documentation systems
Important Note
This role requires an experienced Intensivist capable of independently managing life-threatening maternal emergencies while providing clinical leadership within the Labour Ward Critical Care Unit. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent multidisciplinary collaboration, sound clinical judgement, adherence to evidence-based critical care practices, and an unwavering commitment to maternal and fetal safety.
Pay: ₹60,000.00 - ₹80,000.00 per month
