Role Summary
The Product Development (PD) Merchandiser is responsible for managing the complete product development process, from concept development to sample submission. This role involves close coordination with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely product development, accurate costing, production feasibility, and adherence to quality standards. The ideal candidate should possess strong technical knowledge of home textile product development, vendor capabilities, and sampling processes.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead the product development process at the production unit, including sample development and timely follow-up of all development activities.
· Independently handle yarn calculations, colour separation, product specifications, and development requirements for new products.
· Source yarns, fabrics, trims, and other raw materials from external suppliers based on development requirements.
· Possess sound knowledge of local sample development units, including weaving, looms, dyeing, printing, embroidery, washing, stitching, and finishing facilities.
· Independently prepare accurate costing for all new product developments.
· Translate development specifications into accurate costing and budgeting and initiate sample development immediately.
· Demonstrate strong knowledge of local sample units as well as bulk sewing and production units.
· Oversee the complete development process—from yarn procurement through finishing—and ensure timely submission of samples to the assigned Merchandiser.
· Coordinate closely with the Head Office Product Development team to evaluate production feasibility, finalize product construction, and confirm pricing before initiating development.
· Discuss all new product developments with the Factory Manager before execution to ensure production readiness.
· Ensure all product developments are completed and submitted within committed timelines without compromising quality standards.
· Maintain accurate documentation, including costing sheets, development records, communication logs, sample registers, and counter samples.
· Guide and support the Product Development team in executing sample developments efficiently and according to customer requirements.
· Maintain and regularly update the Sample Development Register and ensure proper tracking of all counter samples.
· Utilize Microsoft Office and other basic computer applications for documentation, reporting, communication, and development tracking.
Qualification:
· Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Textile Technology, Textile Engineering, Fashion Technology, Apparel Management, or a related discipline.
Experience:
· 3- 5 years of relevant experience in Product Development, Merchandising, or Sampling within the Home Textile or Textile Export Industry.
· Proven experience in handling end-to-end product development, sample execution, costing, and commercialization.
Required Skills:
· Strong knowledge of textile manufacturing processes and home textile product development.
· Expertise in yarn calculations, colour separation, product specifications, and sample development.
· Thorough understanding of weaving, dyeing, printing, embroidery, washing, finishing, and sewing processes.
· Strong knowledge of local vendor capabilities and supplier management.
· Good understanding of product costing, budgeting, and pricing strategies.
· Excellent planning, coordination, communication, and interpersonal skills.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and other basic software applications.
· Ability to manage multiple product developments simultaneously while meeting strict timelines.
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
· Ability to work under pressure and deliver quality results within tight deadlines.
Preferred Candidate Profile:
· Prior experience in the Home Textile Export Industry is highly preferred.
· Strong understanding of sample development, production feasibility, and commercialization.
· Ability to collaborate effectively with Merchandising, Production, Quality, Sourcing, and Factory teams.
· Self-driven, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple development projects independently.
