About Instillmotion Labs
Instillmotion Labs is a venture studio building products across autonomous systems, robotics, aviation security, and deep-tech hardware. We operate at the intersection of mechanical engineering, electronics, embedded systems, and IoT—taking products from first principles to deployed systems in the field.
The Role
This is a full ownership, systems-level engineering and leadership role. You will lead the mechanical architecture, integration, and execution of complex electromechanical systems while also driving team performance, project delivery, and engineering quality.
You will not only build products—but also build teams, processes, and engineering culture.
What You’ll Work On
- Electromechanical systems for robotics, UAVs, and autonomous platforms
- Precision mechanisms, structures, and enclosures under real-world constraints
- Subsystem integration (actuators, sensors, PCBs, thermal systems, wiring)
- Prototype-to-production pipelines with rapid iteration
- Cross-functional engineering programs involving mechanical, electronics, and software teams
What You’ll DoEngineering & System Ownership
- Lead conceptual design and system architecture from first principles
- Drive development from blank sheet → prototype → validated system → production-ready design
- Perform and guide engineering analysis (FEA, tolerance stack-ups, thermal, vibration, fatigue)
- Own electromechanical integration across mechanical, electrical, and embedded subsystems
- Oversee prototype assembly, system bring-up, and debugging
- Define and execute testing & validation strategies (functional, environmental, reliability)
- Apply and enforce DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFA (Design for Assembly)
Project Management & Execution
- Translate product ideas into clear engineering requirements and specifications
- Lead requirements gathering with stakeholders (product, electronics, software, operations)
- Plan and drive project timelines, milestones, and deliverables
- Balance speed, quality, and engineering trade-offs under real-world constraints
- Coordinate with vendors and manufacturing partners for fabrication and production readiness
Team Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers through hands-on technical leadership
- Conduct design reviews, technical reviews, and failure analysis sessions
- Establish and enforce engineering best practices, standards, and documentation quality
- Support team building and hiring efforts, helping scale a strong hardware team
- Foster a culture of ownership, rapid learning, and high engineering rigor
What We’re Looking For
- 8–12 years of experience designing, building, and shipping hardware systems
- Strong expertise in mechanical design and system-level engineering
- Proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar)
- Deep understanding of:
- Mechanics, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Tolerance design, fits, and assembly strategies
- Structural, thermal, and vibration considerations
- Proven experience with electromechanical systems integration
- Experience leading projects and mentoring engineers
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-ambiguity environment
What Will Set You Apart
- Experience in robotics, UAVs, aerospace, or autonomous systems
- Strong background in mechanism design and motion systems
- Track record of taking products from prototype to production scale
- Experience with vendor management, supply chain, and manufacturing scale-up
- Prior experience in startup or high-velocity engineering environments
Why Join Us
- Build real systems that get deployed—not just designs on paper
- Own end-to-end product development and team outcomes
- Lead and shape a growing hardware engineering team
- Work in a fast execution environment (weeks, not quarters)
- High ownership, minimal bureaucracy, and direct impact on product success
