Responsibilities
- Drawing blood: Safely draw blood from patients using proper techniques and equipment
- Preparing patients: Explain procedures to patients, and comfort those who are nervous
- Labeling and storing samples: Accurately identify, label, and store blood samples
- Transporting samples: Safely transport blood samples to laboratories for testing
- Updating patient records: Enter patient and sample data into computer systems
- Sterilizing equipment: Clean, prepare, and sterilize equipment used for drawing blood
- Taking other measurements: Take blood pressure, pulse, and respiration readings
- Applying bandages: Apply bandages after drawing blood
- Sending samples to the lab: Send blood, urine, or fecal samples to the lab for testing
