Position Summary
The R&D and Process Development Chemist is responsible for designing, developing, optimizing, and scaling up chemical processes for the manufacture of pharmaceutical intermediates, APIs, fine chemicals, and specialty chemicals. The role involves transferring laboratory processes to pilot and commercial production while ensuring product quality, process safety, regulatory compliance, and cost efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop synthetic routes for new chemical compounds and intermediates.
- Optimize reaction conditions to improve yield, purity, productivity, and cost-effectiveness.
- Develop robust, scalable, and reproducible manufacturing processes.
- Conduct laboratory experiments, analyze results, and recommend process improvements.
- Perform process troubleshooting and resolve manufacturing issues during scale-up and commercial production.
- Prepare laboratory protocols, batch records, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and technical reports.
- Conduct literature reviews and patent searches to identify innovative synthetic approaches.
- Work closely with Production, Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), Engineering, Procurement, and Regulatory teams for successful technology transfer.
- Evaluate raw materials, catalysts, solvents, and process alternatives to improve efficiency and sustainability.
- Ensure compliance with GMP, GLP, EHS, and company safety requirements.
- Support process validation, process verification, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in risk assessments, hazard evaluations, and process safety studies.
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and experimental records.
- Assist in customer technical discussions and provide technical support when required.
Required Qualifications
- M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, or a related field.
- Experience in research and process development within pharmaceutical, fine chemical, or specialty chemical industries.
- Strong understanding of organic synthesis, reaction mechanisms, and purification techniques.
- Knowledge of scale-up principles and process optimization.
- Familiarity with analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, LC-MS, NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis, and Karl Fischer titration.
- Experience preparing technical documentation, SOPs, and technology transfer documents.
- Working knowledge of GMP, GLP, ICH guidelines, and laboratory safety practices.
