As a Lathe Operator in transformer tank fabrication, your primary responsibility is to set up, maintain, and operate lathe machines to machine high-precision components used in the assembly of heavy-duty electrical transformer tanks. This is a crucial role ensuring that custom fittings, bushings, flanges, and structural parts meet strict engineering tolerances to prevent oil leaks and withstand high structural pressure.
Key Responsibilities
1. Machine Setup & Operation
- Drawing Reading: Interpret technical engineering drawings, blueprints, and process sheets to understand the exact dimensions and tolerances required for transformer tank components.
- Tooling Selection: Select the correct cutting tools, chucks, fixtures, and attachments based on the material type (typically heavy-gauge carbon steel or stainless steel).
- Precision Machining: Perform various operations such as turning, facing, boring, threading, and tapering on raw metal stock to manufacture parts like:
- Tank bushings and flanges.
- Lifting lugs and specialized pins.
- Custom bolts, plugs, and sealing valves.
2. Quality & Leak Prevention Focus
- Defect-Free Execution: Ensure surface finishes are exceptionally smooth. In transformer fabrication, parts must achieve a perfect fit-up with the main tank body to prevent oil seepage under high-pressure conditions.
- Measurement & Inspection: Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, thread gauges) to check workpieces against technical specifications.
3. Collaboration & Workflow
- Assembly Support: Work closely with the Fitters and welding teams to ensure machined parts fit seamlessly into the tank's structural layout.
- Material Handling: Safely handle heavy metal workpieces, often utilizing overhead cranes or hoists to mount materials onto the lathe machine safely.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certification in Turner / Machinist trade.
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience, ideally within heavy steel structure fabrication or transformer tank manufacturing environments.
- Technical Know-How: Thorough understanding of cutting speeds, feed rates, and depth of cuts for different grades of industrial steel.
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹35,000.00 per month
