Job summary:
The Milling Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating CNC and conventional milling machines to
manufacture precision components according to engineering drawings, GD&T, and quality standards. The role
includes selecting appropriate tools, defining machining parameters, proving out programs, and performing in-
process inspections to ensure accuracy and compliance. The machinist plays a key role in maintaining
productivity, optimizing machining processes, reducing cycle times, and ensuring first-time-right quality while
following safety and housekeeping standards.
Key Responsibilities
Adherence to level Machining Planning – Study route cards, blueprints, engineering drawings, and material
specifications; interpret GD&T to define precise machining requirements for milling operations.
CNC Programming (Milling) – Create, read, and edit NC programs for 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis milling machines; set
reference points, tool registers, offsets, and compensations; validate and prove out part programs.
Machine Setup – Set up milling machines by installing and aligning tools, cutters, fixtures, and vises; adjust collets,
bushings, and attachments to achieve correct setup and rigidity.
Operational Verification – Inspect first-run and sample workpieces using measuring instruments; ensure accuracy of
dimensions, surface finish, and tolerances before running full batches.
Cutting Parameters – Select and apply optimal cutting speeds, feeds, and depths of cut; monitor tool wear, replace
inserts/cutters, and ensure consistent machining quality.
Equipment Maintenance – Carry out routine cleaning, lubrication, and preventive maintenance of milling machines;
troubleshoot and coordinate repairs when required.
Shift Handover & Documentation – Record production data, inspection results, and machine performance; hand over
accurate updates to incoming shifts to maintain workflow continuity.
Continuous Improvement – Support cycle-time reduction, process optimization, and cost-per-component (CPC)
improvement through feedback and new methods.
Safety & Compliance – Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintain workplace safety, and ensure
compliance with quality management standards.
