Common Heatset Web Offset Positions & Duties
1st Press Operator / Lead Operator
- Sets up, operates, and troubleshoots high-speed, four-color heatset presses.
- Directs the press crew, performs make-readies, and ensures job specifications are met.
- Maintains color consistency, registration, and monitors the curing/drying process.
- Reviews job tickets to determine ink, paper, and finishing requirements.
2nd Press Operator / Assistant Operator
- Assists in setting up paper rolls (splicing) at the backstand.
- Monitors ink levels, water levels, and blanket temperatures.
- Performs regular preventative maintenance and cleaning of the press.
- Handles ink fountain adjustment and roller maintenance
Key Skills and Requirements
- Experience: Usually 1–5 years of specialized experience with heatset offset presses.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of ink/water balance, color management, and drying systems.
- Physical Demands: Ability to stand for long periods and lift heavy objects (25–50+ lbs).
- Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to troubleshoot and perform repairs on machinery
Key Responsibilities
- Quality Control: Regular inspection of printed material for color matching, registration, and curing defects.
- Efficiency: Maintaining high speeds for large-volume, high-quality projects (brochures, magazines).
- Safety: Adhering to safety regulations, including wearing protective equipment.
