Senior Backend PHP Developer (Database-Focused)

We are seeking a highly skilled Backend PHP Developer with deep database expertise to design, build, and optimize data-intensive web applications. This role is heavily focused on backend architecture, data modeling, and performance optimization, with secondary exposure to front-end integration.
You will play a critical role in designing scalable data systems, optimizing query performance, and ensuring the integrity, reliability, and efficiency of our application stack.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs using PHP (Laravel, Symfony, or similar frameworks)
- Design, implement, and optimize complex relational database schemas and data models
- Write high-performance, scalable SQL queries and stored procedures
- Analyze and improve database performance (indexing strategies, query tuning, execution plans)
- Ensure data integrity, consistency, and security across systems
- Develop and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services consumed by front-end applications
- Collaborate with front-end developers to integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic
- Implement caching strategies (Redis, Memcached) to improve application performance
- Participate in system design discussions, including microservices and data architecture decisions
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Monitor and troubleshoot production issues related to application performance and data systems
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional experience in backend PHP development
- Expert-level experience with relational databases (MySQL or similar), including:
- Data modeling and schema design
- Query optimization and performance tuning
- Indexing strategies and execution plan analysis
- Strong proficiency in PHP and at least one major framework (Laravel, Symfony, or CodeIgniter)
- Deep understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) and backend design patterns
- Experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs
- Hands-on experience with Git and collaboration platforms (GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket)
- Experience working in Agile environments (Scrum or Kanban)
- Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and backend deployment practices
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills, especially in translating complex data concepts to stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with large-scale or high-volume data systems
- Familiarity with database replication, partitioning, and sharding strategies
- Experience with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, DynamoDB) where appropriate
- Experience with data pipelines, ETL processes, or data warehousing concepts
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration tools
- Experience implementing caching and message queue systems (Redis, RabbitMQ, Kafka)
- Exposure to microservices or event-driven architectures
Front-End (Secondary Expectations)
- Basic proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript for integration purposes
- Ability to collaborate effectively with UI/UX developers (not a primary responsibility)
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
