Job Description
Job Title:Speech Therapist
Reporting to (Job Title):Head – Capacity Building
Contract type:Part time / Full time renewable two-year contract, including six months’ probation.
Salary:Commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be at par with the sector and similar organisations. Other benefits as per existing policies will be applicable.
Hours:40 Hours per week (including lunch break)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POST:
There is a broad scope to this post within Sense International India (SII & also known as Sense India). In line with the strategic plans and policy guidelines of the organization, the person will work under the guidance of Head – Capacity Building in the planning and implementation of agreed objectives/issues. Apart from the above roles, the post holder will have an opportunity to increase their skills and develop the job.
JOB PURPOSE:
The position requires supporting partner organisations and Sense India’s direct centres through training and skill building activities. Executing content support and monitoring quality of services at partner organisations. The position also necessitates building content knowledge within organisation to be the knowledge leader within field of deafblindness.
· Ensuring that Sense India remains fully involved with and aware of all developments in the deafblind field and build content knowledge within the organisation so as to be the knowledge leader within deafblind field in India.
· Ensure high quality services for persons with deafblindness/MD in projects supported by Sense India and its direct centres.
· Ensure to support the vertical and working towards the objectives of the organisation.
The emphasis on all the work will be a team approach with the Head – Capacity Building, and with the other staff members, both in India and in other countries.
Working with Project partners
· Assessment of current partners in terms of type of support required
· Working with the SII team to assess potential partner organisations and support in their developments.
· “In partner organisations where a Speech Therapist is not available, the post holder will work with educators, rehabilitation workers, families, and programme staff to build their capacity to identify communication needs, develop basic communication plans, use AAC, object cues, tactile and sensory communication strategies, and integrate these into daily routines and intervention plans. The role will not replace direct speech therapy services where clinically required, but will help teams strengthen functional communication support and make appropriate referrals where needed.”
· Identification of training needs for partners on speech, language and communication and other technical areas
· Design individualized therapy programs, integrating speech, language, tactile signing, AAC devices, object cues and sensory communication strategies and train project staff to implement the same and develop strategies to monitor the same
· Collaborate with project staff and families to integrate communication goals into daily routines and educational / vocational programs.
· Maintaining professional knowledge and technical progress to provide children and adults with deafblindness /MD with the best rehabilitation program.
· Contribute to publication of articles, news reports, success stories and other material in newspapers, journals and periodicals for creating public awareness
· Draft content matter for in-house publications
Training and support
· Mapping communication-related needs across selected partners and direct centres.
· Developing simple communication assessment and planning formats that non-speech therapists can use with guidance.
· Training and mentoring partner staff, and orienting families/caregivers, on functional communication, AAC, object cues, tactile communication, routine-based communication, and ways to support communication at home.
· Supporting selected case reviews, model sessions, documentation of communication progress, and development of practical resource materials.
· Participate in developing Annual Calendars like Training, Mentoring, Events etc.
· Contribute and support in budget preparation of the vertical
· Ensuring all training events take place as per training needs of target group.
· Support in organising and facilitating training programmes and workshops
· Enabling organisations working with people with deafblindness/MD to learn from each other.
· Working with the team on follow up of recommendations from Mentors for project partners.
· Development of reference and reading materials according to the needs of target group.
Reports and Documentation
· Preparing reports for training related events and activities.
· Support the Fundraising work by providing relevant information on projects when required
· Support the Resource and Information Unit in preparing materials to include appropriate and up-to-date information about deafblindness
Networking
· Maintaining contact with deafblind practitioners in India and around the world and ensuring that Sense International India is fully aware of, and fully involved in, all regional and international deafblind developments
· Contributing to deafblind developments in South Asia and to the work of Deafblind International in Asia and globally
General
- Be aware of and sensitive to the impact of gender, race, disability and prejudice on attitudes, professional relationships and professional judgement, and be willing to intervene and challenge where necessary.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times and ensure respect for, observance of and adherence to Sense International India’s confidentiality policy by all staff
- Contribute to the development of the role as the organisation develops
- Undertake any task within the job holder’s skills and abilities as may be requested from time to time
- The post holder will be expected to attend meetings and be involved in other activities at irregular hours as required

The emphasis on all areas of work in Sense India is a team approach. The post is self-supporting and the post holder will be responsible for all administrative tasks relating to the job.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential requirements
· Bachelor's / Master’s degree (or equivalent) in speech therapy from an accredited institution
· National / state license to practice speech therapy where practice is located
· 2 years of experience with neuro-communication and neuro-speech disorders
· Experience of working in partnership with NGOs at a national level or least at the state level will be an added advantage.
· You will be fluent in English and Hindi with good communication skills. Knowledge of other languages will be an advantage.
· You will be open to travelling (up to 11 days a month) to any part of India and outside India as required
· You should be computer literate and have experience of using MS Office etc.
· Excellent interpersonal skills
· Ability to work proactively and under minimal supervision
Desirable Requirements
- Experience of working in a similar capacity in national / international organisations
- Understanding of development issues
- Good training and presentation skills
