We are seeking a Linux System Engineer (L2) to join our Operations Control Center (OCC). The ideal candidate will:
Administer and maintain Linux-based web hosting infrastructure (CentOS, Ubuntu), including command-line operations, user management, file permissions, and service control. Configure and troubleshoot web servers (Apache, Nginx), virtual hosts, and performance tuning. Diagnose kernel-level issues such as high load, memory pressure, kernel panics, hung processes, and performance bottlenecks using system and kernel-level logs.
Assess alerts, identify impact, perform initial mitigation, and escalate appropriately with clear documentation. Review suspicious or abusive connections, identify malicious IPs, and block them via firewall rules or tools like Fail2ban. Handle malware or hacked websites — scan for infections, clean malicious files, secure compromised accounts, and guide customers on hardening. Perform website migrations (WordPress, Magento), handle file/database transfers, and restore backups.
Technical Competencies
Strong Linux system administration skills (CentOS, Ubuntu). Web server management (Apache, Nginx). Infrastructure and performance troubleshooting using top, htop, iotop, vmstat, and iostat. Monitoring and alerting experience with tools such as Prometheus, Nagios, Zabbix, or Datadog, including alert threshold tuning and noise reduction. Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, ports, firewalls, routing, latency, packet loss). Bash scripting for automation of checks, log analysis, and repetitive operational tasks.
Qualifications
DNS management — record creation (A, CNAME, MX, TXT), propagation checks, and resolution troubleshooting. Email systems — configuring and diagnosing Postfix/Exim, SMTP troubleshooting, and understanding SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. Database management — MySQL backups, restores, user privileges, and basic query troubleshooting. Control panel familiarity with cPanel/WHM, Plesk, or similar hosting platforms.
Disk management — checking disk space (df, du), identifying large files, handling inode exhaustion, RAID, and managing partitions or LVM. Security fundamentals — firewall configuration (iptables, firewalld), malware scanning (ClamAV, Maldet), and SSH hardening. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical clients and document solutions clearly.
Bonus Points For
Experience with configuration management or automation tools (Ansible, Puppet). Containerization experience (Docker). Advanced scripting (Python). Experience supporting high-traffic WordPress/Magento environments. PHP-FPM tuning and troubleshooting. Familiarity with CDN and caching layers (Cloudflare, Varnish, Redis). Prior experience working in a NOC/OCC or 24x7 hosting support environment.
Schedule
Rotational shifts as part of the Operations Control Center (OCC), providing coverage across business hours. Specific shift allocation will be confirmed during onboarding.
Flexibility to cover occasional weekend or night shifts on a rotational basis is required.
