- Equipment Lifecycle Management: BMEs oversee everything from the procurement of new devices to their final decommissioning. This includes evaluating technical specifications, managing installation, and maintaining a detailed digital inventory of all hospital assets.
- Preventive Maintenance & Calibration: They perform scheduled inspections and calibration of life-saving equipment (like ventilators and defibrillators) to meet strict safety standards such as NABH/JCI or IEC-60601-1.
- Troubleshooting & Emergency Repair: When equipment fails, BMEs are the first responders. They diagnose technical malfunctions, repair or replace faulty components, and restore functionality to minimize clinical downtime.
- Clinical Training: A major part of the role involves training doctors and nurses on how to operate sophisticated machinery safely and effectively.
- Safety & Compliance: They investigate equipment-related incidents, manage FDA recalls, and participate in the hospital’s safety committee to mitigate risks to patients.
- Vendor & Contract Management: BMEs coordinate with manufacturers for specialized servicing (AMCs/CMCs) and ensure that external technicians meet hospital standards.
