Experience: 2–5 years of relevant clinical experience, preferably in Maternity, Postnatal, NICU, or Women & Child Care
Job Summary
The Lactation Nurse is responsible for providing professional breastfeeding support and guidance to mothers during pregnancy, post-delivery, and the postnatal period. The role involves assessing breastfeeding practices, assisting mothers with breastfeeding techniques, addressing common lactation challenges, and promoting successful breastfeeding outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide breastfeeding education and lactation counselling to antenatal and postnatal mothers.
- Assess the mother and baby for breastfeeding readiness and identify lactation-related concerns.
- Assist mothers with correct breastfeeding positions, attachment, and latching techniques.
- Educate mothers on exclusive breastfeeding and the benefits of breast milk.
- Support mothers in establishing and maintaining adequate milk supply.
- Provide guidance on breast care and prevention of common breastfeeding complications.
- Assist mothers experiencing common lactation challenges such as poor latch, engorgement, nipple soreness, and perceived low milk supply.
- Provide appropriate support and education regarding breast milk expression and storage.
- Guide mothers on the safe use of breast pumps, where required.
- Support mothers of preterm, low-birth-weight, or NICU-admitted babies in establishing and maintaining lactation.
- Coordinate with neonatologists, obstetricians, paediatricians, NICU nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding lactation-related concerns.
- Identify mothers and babies requiring additional clinical support and escalate concerns to the concerned doctor or senior clinical team.
- Conduct individual and group breastfeeding education sessions for mothers and attendants.
- Provide discharge counselling and ensure mothers understand breastfeeding practices and follow-up requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation of lactation counselling, assessment, and interventions.
- Follow hospital policies, infection control protocols, patient safety standards, and breastfeeding guidelines.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Participate in patient education programs, quality initiatives, audits, and awareness activities related to breastfeeding and maternal-child health.
- Maintain a compassionate, supportive, and non-judgmental approach while counselling mothers and families.

- Strong interpersonal and coordination skills.
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary clinical teams.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in Maternity, Postnatal Ward, NICU, Labour Ward, or Women & Child Care hospital.
- Certification in Lactation Management / Lactation Counselling will be an added advantage.
- Experience in counselling mothers on breastfeeding and newborn feeding practices is preferred.
