Job Purpose
Responsible for conducting chemical and laboratory testing of raw materials, molten metal, process samples and finished products to ensure compliance with defined specifications, customer requirements and applicable quality standards. The role also supports process control, material verification, laboratory documentation, calibration and continuous improvement activities.
3. Key Responsibilities
A. Chemical & Laboratory Testing
- Conduct chemical analysis of raw materials, alloys, additives and process samples.
- Perform chemical analysis of molten metal for elements such as C, Si, Mn, Mg, S, P and other specified elements.
- Operate and maintain spectrometer/OES and other laboratory testing equipment.
- Carry out wet chemical analysis wherever applicable.
- Verify chemical composition against approved specifications and standards.
- Conduct testing of coating/paint materials, chemicals and consumables as applicable.
B. Raw Material & Process Quality Control
- Collect samples from incoming materials and production processes as per sampling plans.
- Verify material quality against approved specifications.
- Monitor and report chemical deviations during melting and casting operations.
- Coordinate with the Melting, Production and Quality teams for corrective actions.
- Ensure proper identification, traceability and retention of samples.
C. Finished Product Quality
- Support testing and inspection of finished manhole covers and related cast components.
- Review chemical composition and other laboratory test results against product specifications.
- Support mechanical/physical testing requirements such as hardness, tensile strength, microstructure and other applicable tests.
- Assist in investigation of product rejection and customer complaints.
D. Laboratory Management
- Maintain laboratory equipment, instruments and testing facilities.
- Ensure timely calibration/verification of laboratory instruments.
- Maintain laboratory records, test reports, inspection reports and COAs.
- Maintain reference standards, chemicals and laboratory consumables.
- Ensure proper housekeeping and 5S within the laboratory.
E. Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Follow safe practices for chemical handling, storage and disposal.
- Maintain and follow SDS/MSDS requirements.
- Ensure use of appropriate PPE during laboratory and plant activities.
- Follow environmental requirements for chemical waste and laboratory waste disposal.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents and chemical spills immediately.
F. IMS & Audit Compliance
- Follow applicable requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
- Maintain laboratory documentation required for internal and external audits.
- Support corrective action and preventive action activities.
- Participate in internal audits and process improvement initiatives.
4. Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of chemical analysis and laboratory testing.
- Knowledge of foundry/metallurgical chemistry, particularly ductile iron.
- Hands-on experience with OES/Spectrometer is preferred.
- Knowledge of sampling, testing methods and quality specifications.
- Laboratory equipment handling and basic troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of calibration and verification of testing equipment.
- Ability to interpret chemical test results and identify deviations.
- Knowledge of 5S, SPC, CAPA and Root Cause Analysis.
- Good documentation and report-writing skills.
- Knowledge of chemical safety, SDS/MSDS and PPE requirements.
- Basic knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & ISO 45001.
- Good coordination with Production, Melting and QA/QC teams.
5. Educational Qualification
Essential:
- B.Sc. in Chemistry / M.Sc. Chemistry.
Preferred:
- Diploma/Degree in Metallurgy or relevant foundry/metallurgical laboratory experience.
- Certification/training in laboratory testing or quality management.
6. Experience
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in a foundry, ductile iron, cast iron, steel or metal manufacturing industry.
- Experience in a QC/chemical laboratory is preferred.
- Candidates with hands-on experience in spectrometer/OES analysis of cast iron/ductile iron will be preferred.

- Compliance with chemical composition specifications.
- Reduction in testing errors and laboratory-related rejections.
- Calibration compliance of laboratory equipment.

- Laboratory documentation and audit compliance.
- Chemical safety and laboratory housekeeping compliance.
8. Authority & Accountability
The QC Lab Chemist is responsible for accurate and timely reporting of laboratory test results and shall immediately escalate any deviation from specified chemical/process parameters to the QC/QA and Production/Melting team for necessary corrective action.
