Role Overview
The PICU Staff Nurse delivers specialized, high‑acuity care to critically ill infants, children, and adolescents. This role requires strong pediatric clinical skills, vigilance, and the ability to respond rapidly to changing patient conditions. The nurse works closely with pediatric intensivists and the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, compassionate, and evidence‑based care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide continuous nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients in the PICU
- Monitor vital signs, ventilators, infusion pumps, and pediatric life‑support equipment
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and emergency interventions as per pediatric protocols
- Assist pediatric intensivists during procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, and bedside diagnostics
- Perform accurate and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, and patient progress
- Maintain strict infection‑control and child‑safety standards
- Respond promptly to pediatric emergencies and participate in code blue and rapid response situations
- Coordinate with doctors, respiratory therapists, and allied health teams for comprehensive patient management
- Provide emotional support and clear communication to parents and families
- Ensure thorough handover during shift changes with complete clinical updates
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Diploma in Nursing / B.Sc. Nursing with valid nursing registration
- Minimum 2 years of experience in PICU / NICU / Pediatric Critical Care
- Strong understanding of pediatric critical‑care protocols, growth parameters, and age‑specific needs
- Ability to interpret pediatric ECGs, ABGs, and other diagnostics
- High level of clinical accuracy, vigilance, and adherence to safety standards
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and child‑centered care skills
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high‑pressure, emotionally sensitive situations
