Position Summary
The R&D and Quality Head – Insulating Varnish is responsible for leading product development, process improvement, and quality assurance functions for electrical insulating varnishes (impregnating varnishes, enamels, resins, and related coatings used in motors, transformers, coils, and electrical windings). The role combines hands-on chemistry/formulation expertise with strong quality systems leadership to ensure products meet customer specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesResearch & Development
- Lead formulation and development of new insulating varnish products
- Improve existing formulations for better dielectric strength, thermal class rating, viscosity control, curing time, adhesion, and chemical resistance
- Develop and validate raw material specifications; evaluate alternate/cost-effective raw materials (resins, solvents, catalysts, additives) without compromising performance
- Conduct trials for new applications
- Benchmark products against competitor offerings and evolving customer requirements
- Drive innovation toward newer formulations
- Scale up lab-formulated products to pilot and full plant-scale production
- Maintain technical documentation: formulation records, trial reports, MSDS/SDS, and technical data sheets (TDS)
Quality Assurance & Control
- Establish and maintain quality management systems (ISO 9001 and related standards) for raw materials, in-process, and finished goods
- Define and monitor critical quality parameters: viscosity, solid content, gel time, dielectric strength, thermal class, flash point, specific gravity, moisture content, curing characteristics
- Set up and oversee testing protocols per standards (as applicable)
- Investigate customer complaints, conduct root cause analysis (RCA), and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
- Approve/reject raw material batches and finished product batches based on test results
- Ensure calibration and maintenance of laboratory and testing equipment
- Lead internal audits and support external/customer/certification audits
- Train QC/QA staff and production teams on quality standards and testing procedures
Leadership & Cross-Functional Coordination
- Manage and mentor R&D and QC laboratory team members
- Coordinate with Production, Procurement, and Sales teams on formulation feasibility, cost optimization, and customer technical queries
- Liaise with raw material suppliers for new material evaluation and vendor development
- Support new product introduction (NPI) and manage product lifecycle documentation
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and MIS for management review
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards in lab and plant operations
Required Qualifications
- Education: M.Sc./B.Sc. in Chemistry, or B.E./B.Tech/M.Tech in Chemical/Polymer/Paint Technology (Paint Technology specialization preferred)
- Experience: 8–15 years in insulating varnish, paints, resins, coatings, or electrical insulation materials industry, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership/managerial capacity
- Strong knowledge of polymer chemistry — polyester, epoxy, polyurethane, silicone, and alkyd resin systems
- Hands-on experience with impregnation processes
- Familiarity with relevant standards
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 QMS; ISO 14001/45001 exposure is a plus
- Proficiency in lab testing equipment and instrumentation for dielectric, thermal, and physical property testing

- Project management skills for handling multiple R&D initiatives simultaneously
- Excellent documentation and report-writing ability
- Good communication skills for supplier and customer technical interactions
- Working knowledge of MS Office/ERP systems for quality and lab data management
