Key Responsibilities
Typical duties (drawn from recent job postings and descriptions in India) include:
- Conducting user research — interviews, surveys, usability testing, heuristic evaluations, and competitor analysis to understand user needs, behaviors, and pain points.
- Creating user personas, user flows, journey maps, storyboards, and information architecture.
- Designing wireframes, low-fidelity to high-fidelity prototypes, and mockups.
- Developing intuitive UI elements — layouts, components, icons, typography, color systems, and visual hierarchies that align with brand guidelines.
- Building responsive designs for web and mobile platforms (including accessibility and government guidelines where applicable).
- Collaborating with product managers, developers, engineers, and stakeholders to translate requirements into design solutions and ensure smooth handoff (e.g., design systems in Figma).
- Performing usability testing, iterating based on feedback, and optimizing for speed/performance.
- Advocating for user-centric design and sometimes contributing to AI/ML-driven interfaces or data-heavy products.
Many roles emphasize producing user-centric, effective, and appealing products while working in multi-disciplinary (Agile/Scrum) teams.
Required Skills and Tools
- Proficiency in design tools: Figma (most common), Adobe XD, Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator.
- Understanding of user-centered design principles, interaction design, and accessibility standards.
- Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS/JavaScript (helpful for collaboration with developers; some roles expect it).
- Soft skills: Strong communication, problem-solving, empathy, and ability to present designs.
- Bonus: Experience with prototyping tools, motion design, design systems, or AI tools.
Experience levels vary:
- Fresher/Junior (0–3 years): Focus on wireframing, basic UI, and learning research.
- Mid-level (3–7 years): Full ownership of projects, user testing, and collaboration.
- Senior/Principal (8+ years): Leading teams, complex systems (e.g., AI interfaces), mentoring.
