Job Summary:
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing mechanical layouts and enclosure structures for Low Tension (LT) switchgear and electrical control panels. The role involves preparing fabrication drawings, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, optimizing designs for manufacturing, and coordinating with production, electrical design, and procurement teams to deliver high-quality panel solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design mechanical layouts for LT electrical panels, including PCC, MCC, APFC, PLC, VFD, Synchronizing Panels, AMF Panels, Distribution Boards (DB), and Control Panels.
- Prepare General Arrangement (GA) drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and sheet metal drawings.
- Design panel enclosures, compartments, cable alleys, busbar chambers, mounting arrangements, and ventilation systems.
- Develop 2D and 3D models using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or similar CAD software.
- Prepare detailed Bill of Materials (BOM) for sheet metal, hardware, accessories, busbar supports, and mechanical components.
- Ensure designs comply with IEC 61439, IS standards, IP protection, Form of Separation, and customer specifications.
- Coordinate with electrical design engineers to ensure proper component placement and cable routing.
- Support production by resolving manufacturing and assembly-related issues.
- Coordinate with procurement for material selection and vendor development.
- Implement value engineering and cost optimization without compromising quality and safety.
- Maintain engineering documents, design revisions, and technical records.
- Provide technical support during inspection, FAT, and customer approvals.
Required Qualifications:
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
- 2–8 years of experience in LT Switchgear or Electrical Panel Manufacturing.
- Experience in sheet metal design and enclosure engineering is preferred.
Required Skills:
- Strong knowledge of sheet metal fabrication and enclosure design.
- Experience in designing LT Switchgear Panels and Electrical Control Panels.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and at least one 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, etc.).
- Knowledge of fabrication processes such as laser cutting, CNC punching, bending, welding, powder coating, and assembly.
- Understanding of IP protection, Form of Separation, ventilation, and structural strength requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret SLDs, GA drawings, and electrical layouts.
- Good knowledge of BOM preparation and revision control.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and Microsoft Office.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
