Job Summary
Level 2 Wintel and VMware Administrator Role Overview, Responsibilities, and Required Qualifications Position Summary The Level 2 Wintel and VMware Administrator is responsible for providing intermediate-level support, maintenance, and administration of Microsoft Windows-based servers and VMware virtualization platforms. This role ensures the smooth operation, reliability, and security of the organization\'s virtual and physical server infrastructure, while collaborating with Level 1 support and escalating complex issues to Level 3 specialists when necessary. Key Responsibilities • Server Administration: Manage, monitor, and maintain Windows Server environments (2012/2016/2019/2022), including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy. • VMware Platform Support: Administer VMware vSphere environments, including ESXi hosts, vCenter, resource pools, and virtual machines. Perform VM provisioning, cloning, migration, and troubleshooting. • Incident and Problem Management: Respond to and resolve Level 2 support tickets related to Wintel and VMware issues. Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions. • Patch Management: Apply operating system and hypervisor patches, updates, and hotfixes in accordance with organizational policies and change management procedures. • Backup and Recovery: Monitor and manage backup jobs, verify backup integrity, and perform restores as needed using enterprise backup solutions. • Performance Monitoring: Track server and VM performance metrics, proactively identify bottlenecks, and recommend optimizations. • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of server configurations, changes, incidents, and procedures. • Security Compliance: Implement security best practices, monitor for vulnerabilities, and assist in audits and remediation efforts. • Collaboration: Work with network, storage, and application teams to ensure integrated and reliable IT services. Required Qualifications • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience). • 2-4 years of hands-on experience in Windows server administration and VMware virtualization. • Strong understanding of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy management. • Proficiency in VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter administration. • Familiarity with backup and recovery solutions (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Veritas). • Basic scripting skills (PowerShell, Batch, or similar) are a plus. • Good troubleshooting and analytical skills. • Excellent communication and documentation abilities. • Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft MCSA/MCSE, VMware VCP) preferred. Work Environment & Schedule This position typically operates in a hybrid or on-site IT infrastructure environment. Level 2 administrators may participate in a rotating on-call schedule and will be required to work occasional evenings or weekends to perform maintenance or respond to high-priority incidents. Career Path Successful Level 2 Wintel and VMware Administrators may advance to Level 3 engineering roles, architecture positions, or specialized areas such as cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, or automation.
