Job Description – Emergency/Casualty Staff Nurse
Position: Emergency/Casualty Staff Nurse
Department: Emergency & Casualty Department
Reports To: Nursing Superintendent / Duty Medical Officer / Hospital Administrator
Purpose of the Role
The Emergency/Casualty Staff Nurse is responsible for providing immediate, safe, and effective nursing care to patients presenting with medical, surgical, trauma, and other emergencies. The nurse shall assist in stabilization, treatment, monitoring, and documentation while ensuring timely coordination with doctors and other departments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Assessment and Triage
* Receive and assess patients arriving at the emergency department.
* Record vital signs and perform initial nursing assessment.
* Identify critical patients and prioritize care based on the severity of the condition.
* Inform the Duty Medical Officer immediately about emergency cases.
2. Emergency Patient Care
* Provide prompt nursing care to emergency and critically ill patients.
* Assist doctors during emergency procedures and resuscitation.
* Administer medications, injections, IV fluids, oxygen therapy, and nebulization as prescribed.
* Monitor patient condition continuously and report any deterioration immediately.
3. Trauma and Critical Care Support
* Assist in managing trauma, accident, poisoning, cardiac, respiratory, and other emergency cases.
* Prepare and maintain emergency equipment, crash cart, oxygen cylinders, suction apparatus, and defibrillator.
* Ensure emergency drugs and consumables are adequately stocked and readily available.
4. Documentation and Records
* Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, treatments, medications, and procedures.
* Record all emergency interventions in patient records.
* Ensure proper handover documentation during shift changes.
5. Infection Control and Patient Safety
* Follow infection control protocols and universal precautions.
* Ensure safe handling and disposal of biomedical waste.
* Maintain cleanliness and readiness of the casualty department.
6. Coordination and Communication
* Coordinate with laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, ambulance services, and inpatient departments.
* Facilitate patient transfers to ICU, OT, wards, or referral centers as required.
* Communicate effectively with patients and attendants regarding treatment and procedures.
7. Equipment and Stock Management
* Check emergency equipment and drug stocks at the beginning of each shift.
* Maintain records of emergency medicines and consumables.
* Report equipment malfunction or stock shortages immediately.
8. Medico-Legal Cases (MLC)
* Follow hospital protocols for medico-legal cases.
* Ensure proper documentation and timely notification to the concerned authorities as per hospital policy.
* Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Shift Responsibilities
* Ensure proper handover and takeover of patients and department status.
* Monitor admitted and observation patients regularly.
* Maintain readiness of the casualty department 24/7.
Required Skills
* Strong emergency and critical care nursing skills.
* Ability to work under pressure and respond quickly during emergencies.
* Knowledge of BLS/ACLS protocols.
* Good communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
Additional Responsibilities
* Participate in emergency drills and training programs.
* Assist in quality improvement activities and audits.
* Perform any other duties assigned by hospital management related to emergency patient care and department operations.
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹25,000.00 per month
