A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) Technician is a specialized healthcare professional who measures lung function by conducting diagnostic tests like spirometry, lung volumes, and diffusion capacity (DLCO) to assist physicians in diagnosing respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, or fibrosis. They prepare patients for tests, operate, calibrate, and maintain pulmonary equipment, and ensure accurate data collection
Key Responsibilities and Duties
· Diagnostic Testing: Performs pulmonary function tests, including spirometry, DLCO (lung diffusion), lung volumes (plethysmography), and bronchial challenge tests.
· Patient Care: Prepares patients by explaining procedures, coaching them through difficult breathing maneuvers to ensure accurate results, and monitoring for distress.
· Equipment Maintenance: Calibrates, cleans, and disinfects equipment (e.g., flow sensors, plethysmograph boxes) to maintain accuracy and infection control standards.
· Data Analysis: Records, interprets, and documents test data into electronic medical records (EMR) for pulmonologist review.
