About Plains
Plains (plains.design) is an independent clothing label based in Kolkata. We design, produce in small batches, and retail handwoven and handcrafted clothing ethically and sustainably made by artisans in India.
The Role
The Operations Manager will be a key member of our team responsible for managing our ground operations and supply chain in Kolkata. You will work directly with the founder and will be entrusted with a high level of autonomy, and accountability, to run our operations in India - including coordinating, planning with and reporting to the founder on a regular basis, both in-person and online.
Your key responsibilities will include
- Artisan Management: Onboarding local makers, setting clear quality standards, negotiating and maintaining strong relationships with weaving clusters and makers across Bengal and India.
- Inventory & Production Timelines: Translating sales demand into production schedules, tracking raw materials and supplies and ensuring zero stock-outs on core products.
- Quality Assurance (QA): Setting up a multi-point inspection process (fabric defect checks, stitch quality, sizing accuracy) before items hit the warehouse.
- Logistics & Order Fulfillment: Managing local warehousing, packaging standards, and coordinating with national courier partners (e.g., DHL).
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a self-motivated individual who likes to take ownership and thrives in a dynamic, and creative environment.
- Empathy + Firmness Artisans often work on unpredictable schedules. The manager must understand ground realities (e.g., weather, festivals and other delays), without compromising production deadlines.
- Organisation & Planning Managing our ground operations requires navigating uncertain demand and supply timelines, and being able to plan for unpredictabilities of the handloom and tailoring driven supply chain. Coordinating, and regular reporting to the founder.
- Fabric & Construction knowledge Ability to spot weave defects, inconsistencies, and tailoring flaws before products are dispatched to customers.
- E-commerce Tech Literacy Familiarity with Google Sheets / Docs, inventory systems (Shopify) to sync offline production with online inventory.
- Language fluency & travel Fluency in Bengali and/or Hindi, and working knowledge of English. Willingness to travel within West Bengal and India as needed.
