Container Surveyor
Job Summary
A Container Surveyor is responsible for inspecting shipping containers to ensure they meet industry standards for safety, structural integrity, and operational readiness. The role involves assessing container condition, identifying damages, recommending repairs, and preparing inspection reports in compliance with international shipping regulations and company procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect dry, refrigerated (reefer), and special-purpose shipping containers before and after use.
- Assess containers for structural damage, corrosion, dents, cracks, leaks, and other defects.
- Evaluate container suitability for cargo loading and transportation.
- Prepare detailed inspection and damage reports with photographs and repair estimates.
- Recommend repair methods in accordance with industry standards.
- Verify that repairs are completed to the required quality standards.
- Conduct on-hire, off-hire, pre-trip, and depot inspections.
- Ensure compliance with applicable international container inspection and safety standards.
- Coordinate with depot personnel, shipping lines, customers, and repair vendors.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation.
- Report unsafe conditions and ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Logistics, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of experience in container inspection, shipping, logistics, or container depot operations (preferred).
- Freshers with relevant technical qualifications may be considered for trainee positions.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of container construction and repair techniques.
- Understanding of international container inspection standards.
- Ability to identify structural defects and assess repair requirements.
- Attention to detail and strong observation skills.
- Report writing and documentation skills.
- Basic computer proficiency (MS Office and inspection software).
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments and travel to ports, depots, and customer locations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in container inspection or repair.
- Knowledge of container safety regulations and depot operations.
- Experience with reefer container inspections.
- Familiarity with container management systems.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Number of containers inspected per day/month.
- Accuracy and quality of inspection reports.
- Turnaround time for inspections.
- Compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Reduction in inspection errors and customer disputes.
- Timely completion of repair verification.
Working Conditions
- Work at container depots, ports, terminals, warehouses, and logistics facilities.
- Frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- May require shift work, weekend duties, and occasional travel.
