Job Description
Role Title: Vehicle Electrical Engineer – EV Conversion (Forklifts)
Reporting To: Project Lead / Engineering Head
Location: Pune, India
Project Type: Diesel-to-Battery Forklift Conversion
Experience – 5 to 8 yrs
Role Purpose
The Vehicle Electrical Engineer will lead and execute the electrical engineering scope for converting diesel-operated forklifts into battery-electric forklifts. The role is hands-on, coordination-intensive, and trial-driven, requiring strong EV domain knowledge combined with excellent vendor management and communication skills. This position sits at the intersection of engineering, vendors, and system designers.
Key Responsibilities
1. EV Electrical System Integration
- Support design, integration, and validation of battery packs, BMS, motor controllers, traction motors, DC-DC converters, chargers, and wiring harnesses.
- Ensure compatibility between legacy forklift systems and new electric drivetrain components.
- Review electrical schematics, layouts, and interface definitions.
2. Vendor Coordination & Parts Management
- Coordinate with component vendors and suppliers for EV subsystems and electrical parts.
- Obtain technical specifications, drawings, test data, and compliance documents.
- Support sourcing decisions by providing technical inputs and feasibility assessments.
- Act as the single-point engineering interface for vendors during development and trials.
3. Trials, Testing & Troubleshooting
- Participate actively in prototype build, commissioning, and field trials.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, control, and integration issues during testing.
- Support root-cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
- Ensure issues are closed with permanent engineering solutions, not workarounds.
4. Interface with System Designers
- Coordinate with internal and external system designers (mechanical, electrical, control, and EV system architects).
- Translate design intent into executable electrical configurations on the vehicle.
- Provide feedback from trials to designers for design iteration and improvement.
5. Documentation & Technical Communication
- Maintain updated electrical documentation, wiring diagrams, interface notes, and trial reports.
- Communicate issues, risks, and progress clearly to internal stakeholders and management.
- Support basic compliance and safety documentation related to EV systems.
Critical Skill Requirements
Technical Skills (Must-Have)
- Strong fundamentals in vehicle electrical systems.
- Practical experience with EV or hybrid vehicles, electric drivetrains, or electric industrial equipment.
- Hands-on exposure to battery systems, BMS, motor controllers, CAN communication, and power electronics.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Field-level troubleshooting capability.
Soft Skills (Equally Important)
- Strong communication skills to interact with vendors, designers, and internal teams.
- Ability to explain technical issues clearly to non-specialists.
- Proactive coordination and follow-up mindset.
- Structured problem-solving and calm approach during trials and failures.
- Comfortable working in ambiguity and early-stage development environments.
Experience & Background
- 5-8 years of relevant experience in vehicle electrical engineering, EV development, or electric industrial vehicles.
- Prior exposure to EV conversion, retrofitting, or prototype development is a strong advantage.
- Experience working with suppliers and external engineering partners preferred.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.
- EV-specific certifications or project experience will be an added advantage.
