Power Substation Technician installs, maintains, and repairs high-voltage equipment—such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switchgear—to ensure reliable electricity transmission. They perform preventive maintenance, test protective relays, troubleshoot electrical faults, and interpret schematics while strictly adhering to safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repair: Conducts routine inspections, testing, and repairs on power transformers, load tap changers, circuit breakers, and battery systems.
- Troubleshooting: Uses diagnostic equipment and electrical schematics to identify faults in relay systems and control wiring.
- Safety Compliance: Ensures all work adheres to local, state, and national safety regulations (e.g., OSHA), often operating under high-pressure, hazardous conditions.
- Installation & Commissioning: Installs and tests new substation equipment, including fiber optic cabling and SCADA communication systems.
- Documentation: Maintains detailed records of maintenance, testing, and equipment readings.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent, with an Associate degree in Electrical Technology or technical certification preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in substation maintenance, electrical troubleshooting, or high-voltage utility work.
- Skills: Proficiency in reading electrical schematics, using diagnostic testing tools, and computer literacy for relay testing.
- Physical Ability: Ability to work at heights, lift heavy equipment, and work in varied weather conditions.
Work Environment
- This role requires working in electric power substations, sometimes in outdoor environments.
- Technicians are often on-call to respond immediately to power outages or equipment failure.
