Job Summary
The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of medical equipment and technology within the hospital. The role involves installation, inspection, preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, performance testing, and documentation of biomedical equipment. The engineer will work closely with clinical departments, medical staff, vendors, and hospital administration to ensure equipment availability and patient safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain biomedical and medical equipment across various hospital departments, including ICU, OT, emergency, wards, laboratories, radiology, and diagnostic areas.
- Perform preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) according to manufacturer recommendations and hospital schedules.
- Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and repair medical equipment to ensure safe and effective operation.
- Coordinate installation, commissioning, acceptance testing, and decommissioning of medical equipment.
- Conduct or coordinate calibration and performance verification of equipment as required.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment inventory, service history, maintenance activities, calibration certificates, and breakdown reports.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and minimize downtime, particularly for critical-care equipment.
- Coordinate with authorized service providers and equipment vendors for repairs, warranty support, annual maintenance contracts (AMC), and comprehensive maintenance contracts (CMC).
- Assist in the evaluation and technical assessment of new medical equipment before purchase.
- Participate in preparing technical specifications, quotations, comparative statements, and equipment procurement recommendations.
- Ensure biomedical equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer instructions, hospital policies, and applicable safety requirements.
- Train and educate doctors, nurses, technicians, and other users on the safe and proper operation of medical equipment.
- Investigate equipment-related incidents and assist in identifying corrective and preventive actions.
- Support hospital quality, accreditation, and patient-safety requirements related to medical equipment.
- Maintain appropriate documentation for audits and regulatory inspections.
- Monitor equipment performance and recommend replacement or upgradation when equipment becomes obsolete, unreliable, or uneconomical to maintain.
- Follow electrical, radiation, infection-control, occupational-safety, and other applicable hospital safety procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professional conduct while working in clinical areas.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
- Relevant hospital biomedical/clinical engineering experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of medical equipment maintenance, electrical/electronic troubleshooting, calibration, and safety practices.
