Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Purchase Engineer with strong expertise in vendor development, supplier management, and procurement of custom-engineered mechanical components.
The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience in sourcing fabricated parts, machined components, welded structures, and machine-specific assemblies as per engineering drawings, BOMs, and manufacturing requirements.
This role is focused on developing capable manufacturing vendors and ensuring timely procurement of high-quality components for machine-building applications. This is not a standard purchase role involving off-the-shelf items; the candidate will work closely with engineering and production teams to source customized parts.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, develop, and manage vendors for fabricated and machined components.
- Source machine-specific parts based on engineering drawings, specifications, and BOMs.
- Understand manufacturing processes including:
- Fabrication
- CNC machining
- Welding
- Laser cutting
- Bending
- Surface treatment processes
- Coordinate with Design, Production, and Quality teams to understand technical requirements.
- Float RFQs, analyze quotations, negotiate pricing, delivery schedules, and commercial terms.
- Evaluate vendor capabilities, production capacity, quality standards, and manufacturing processes.
- Conduct vendor visits and supplier audits whenever required.
- Track supplier performance, delivery commitments, and production progress.
- Ensure supplied components meet drawing specifications and quality requirements.
- Maintain supplier databases, procurement records, cost comparisons, and documentation.
- Support cost reduction initiatives and alternate vendor development.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of fabrication and machining processes.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and BOMs.
- Experience in vendor development and supplier management.
- Good understanding of materials such as MS, SS, Aluminium, and engineering materials.
- Knowledge of manufacturing tolerances and quality requirements.
- Strong negotiation and costing skills.
- Good communication and coordination abilities.
- ERP knowledge will be an added advantage.
Preferred Experience & Qualification
- Experience in SPM (Special Purpose Machines), automation, industrial equipment, or machine manufacturing industry.
- Experience in sourcing:
- Fabricated structures
- Precision machined parts
- Custom mechanical assemblies
- Exposure to machine-building or engineering manufacturing environments.
- Existing vendor network in fabrication and machining industries will be preferred.
Key Performance Indicators (Success Measures)
- Timely procurement of fabricated, machined, and custom components to support production schedules.
- Development and qualification of reliable manufacturing suppliers.
- Achieving cost optimization through competitive sourcing and alternate vendor development.
- Maintaining quality compliance with minimal rejection and adherence to engineering standards.
- Effective supplier follow-up and resolution of delivery or quality issues.
- Strong coordination with Design, Production, and Quality teams for smooth procurement execution.
