Junior Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OBG)
Job Summary:
The Junior Consultant – OBG will provide comprehensive clinical care to women across obstetric and gynaecological conditions, including antenatal care, normal and high-risk pregnancies, labour management, gynaecological disorders, and postnatal care. The role involves working closely with senior consultants and the multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure safe, evidence-based patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct outpatient consultations and evaluate patients with obstetric and gynaecological conditions.
- Provide antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
- Manage normal deliveries and assist in high-risk obstetric cases.
- Perform or assist with procedures such as episiotomy, suturing, IUCD insertion/removal, and other OBG procedures as appropriate.
- Assist senior consultants in Caesarean sections and major/minor gynaecological surgeries.
- Diagnose and manage common gynaecological conditions, menstrual disorders, PCOS, infections, infertility-related concerns, and menopausal problems.
- Monitor patients during labour and identify complications requiring escalation.
- Attend emergency OBG cases and provide timely initial management.
- Maintain accurate patient records, clinical documentation, and discharge summaries.
- Counsel patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, pregnancy care, contraception, and follow-up.
- Coordinate with nursing, anaesthesia, neonatology, radiology, laboratory, and other departments.
- Participate in clinical meetings, audits, teaching, and quality-improvement activities.
- Follow hospital policies, infection-control standards, ethical guidelines, and patient-safety protocols.
Eligibility
- MBBS with MD/MS/DNB in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
- Valid registration with the relevant medical council.
- Relevant clinical experience may be preferred depending on the hospital.
- Good communication, clinical decision-making, and teamwork skills.
Preferred Skills
- Strong knowledge of obstetric and gynaecological emergencies.
- Ability to manage patients independently within the scope of training and experience.
- Good procedural and documentation skills.
- Patient-centred approach and effective counselling skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a busy hospital environment and participate in on-call duties.
