Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Medical Coder with expertise in Gastroenterology coding. The candidate will be responsible for reviewing medical records, assigning accurate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes, ensuring compliance with payer guidelines, and supporting revenue cycle optimization for GI procedures and services.
The ideal candidate should possess strong knowledge of Gastroenterology specialty coding, medical terminology, anatomy, and reimbursement methodologies along with relevant coding certifications.
Key Responsibilities
Review and analyze medical records, physician documentation, operative notes, and diagnostic reports for accurate code assignment.
Assign appropriate:
ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes
CPT procedure codes
HCPCS Level II codes
Perform coding for Gastroenterology procedures including:
Colonoscopy
EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
ERCP
Sigmoidoscopy
Capsule Endoscopy
GI biopsies and therapeutic procedures
Ensure compliance with:
CMS guidelines
AMA coding standards
HIPAA regulations
Payer-specific coding policies
Identify documentation gaps and query providers when clarification is required.
Maintain coding accuracy and productivity targets.
Support denial management and coding audits.
Participate in internal quality reviews and process improvement initiatives.
Stay updated with coding changes, payer updates, and industry regulations.
Required Skills & Knowledge
Strong understanding of:
Gastroenterology anatomy and procedures
Medical terminology
ICD-10-CM
CPT & HCPCS coding
Modifier usage
NCCI edits
Knowledge of medical billing and reimbursement methodologies.
Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems. (ECW) Preferred
Good analytical and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and meet productivity targets.
Required Certifications
Candidates should possess at least one of the following certifications:
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) – from AAPC
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) – from AHIMA
Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
CIC / Specialty certifications are an added advantage.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Any Life Science Graduate / Pharmacy / Nursing / Medical background preferred.
Experience:
2–6 years of medical coding experience.
Minimum 1–2 years of Gastroenterology coding experience preferred.
Flexible to work in rotational or night shifts if required.
