Job Summary
The VMC Operator is responsible for operating Vertical Machining Centre (VMC) machines to produce precision components as per engineering drawings and quality standards. The role involves machine setup, tool handling, inspection of machined parts, preventive maintenance, and ensuring safe and efficient production.
Key Responsibilities1. Machine Operation
- Operate VMC machines to manufacture components according to production schedules.
- Load and unload raw materials and finished components.
- Perform machine setup for repeat production jobs.
- Monitor machining operations and ensure uninterrupted production.
2. Drawing Interpretation
- Read and understand engineering drawings, process sheets, and work instructions.
- Verify dimensions and machining requirements before production.
- Identify and report drawing discrepancies to the supervisor.
3. Tool Management
- Install, replace, and set cutting tools.
- Monitor tool wear and perform timely tool changes.
- Maintain proper tool offsets and tool life records.
4. Quality Inspection
- Inspect machined components using measuring instruments such as:
- Vernier Caliper
- Micrometer
- Height Gauge
- Bore Gauge
- Dial Indicator
- Ensure components meet dimensional and quality specifications.
- Record inspection results as required.
5. Production & Documentation
- Achieve daily production targets with minimum rejection.
- Maintain machine operation logs and production records.
- Report machine downtime and production issues promptly.
6. Machine Maintenance
- Perform daily cleaning and basic preventive maintenance.
- Check coolant levels, lubrication, and machine condition.
- Report machine abnormalities to the maintenance department.
7. Safety & 5S
- Follow all company safety procedures and PPE requirements.
- Maintain cleanliness and housekeeping around the machine.
- Comply with 5S and ISO quality standards.
Required Qualifications
- ITI / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- 2–5 years of experience operating VMC machines in a manufacturing environment.
- Freshers with relevant VMC training may also be considered.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of VMC machine operations.
- Ability to read engineering drawings.
- Familiarity with measuring instruments.
- Basic understanding of CNC machining parameters.
- Knowledge of cutting tools and inserts.
- Good troubleshooting skills.
- Strong attention to quality and accuracy.
- Ability to work in shifts if required.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in Fanuc, Siemens, Mitsubishi, or Haas control systems.
- Knowledge of fixture setup.
- Understanding of CNC programs and offsets.
- Experience with precision machining of industrial automation or heavy engineering components.
