Key Responsibilities
- Operating Equipment: Operating rotary, air-track, or diamond drill rigs to create blast holes or core samples to specific depths.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensuring all drilling activities comply with environmental, safety, and health regulations, including managing drilling fluids and identifying hazards.
- Drilling Optimization: Monitoring pressure, rotation speed, and penetration rates to adjust techniques for varying rock conditions.
- Site Management: Preparing drilling sites, setting up machinery, and performing daily inspections/maintenance on rigs.
- Data Collection & Reporting: Recording daily drilling progress, including geological data and samples collected, and completing daily drilling reports.
- Supervision: Leading a team of drillers' offsiders or assistants to ensure efficient operations and proper maintenance
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Aptitude: Strong understanding of mechanical operations and troubleshooting equipment.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to work in challenging environments, including heat, cold, and dusty conditions, often for 12-hour shifts.
- Experience: Previous experience as a driller’s offsider or similar assistant role is highly desirable.
- Qualifications: While high levels of formal education are often not required, specialized licenses for explosive handling or machine operation may be required.
- Certifications: Valid driver’s license, safety certificates (e.g., mine safety training), and valid certification to operate specific types of machinery.
Physical & Working Conditions
- Environment: Underground or surface mining sites.
- Schedule: Often involves long, intense 12-hour shifts and rostered work (e.g., Fly-in-Fly-out).
- Demands: Physically demanding work including handling heavy tools and performing maintenance.
