Role description
Insurance Business Analyst
Experienced Insurance Business Analyst who can translate commercial property and casualty insurance needs into product capabilities, workflows, data requirements, and implementation-ready specifications for a modern policy administration system (PAS).
This role is intended for someone who can work closely with Solution Architects, Developers, QA, other Business Analysts, and implementation teams to design and deliver configurable insurance product functionality across the full policy lifecycle.
The ideal candidate must bring deep commercial P&C domain experience, direct implementation or operating experience with a packaged PAS, and the product-thinking ability to help envision and design a greenfield PAS rather than simply document current-state processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead discovery and requirements definition for commercial P&C product capabilities, including quoting, rating, underwriting, policy issuance, endorsements, renewals, cancellations, reinstatements, audits, forms, and regulatory rules.
- Partner with project team to define the target-state capabilities and user experience for a greenfield policy administration platform.
- Translate business objectives and insurance product concepts into clear epics, features, user stories, process flows, decision tables, business rules, acceptance criteria, data mappings, and non-functional requirements.
- Challenge legacy processes and help design configurable, reusable product capabilities rather than recreating carrier-specific or homegrown system behavior.
- Participate in definition of product models for lines of business, jurisdictions, coverages, limits, deductibles, modifiers, classifications, forms, eligibility, referrals, authority levels, and underwriting rules.
- Facilitate workshops and design sessions with business and technology stakeholders, reconcile competing requirements, and drive decisions to closure.
- Collaborate with UX, architecture, engineering, and QA teams throughout delivery to clarify intent, evaluate solution options, support backlog refinement, and validate implemented functionality.
- Support packaged PAS implementation activities such as product configuration, integration definition, testing, defect triage, user acceptance testing, deployment readiness, and post-production stabilization.
- Create and maintain product documentation, capability maps, traceability, process models, decision logs, and implementation guidance that can be reused across products and client implementations.
- Act as a domain thought partner who can explain commercial insurance concepts to technical teams and explain system constraints and design tradeoffs to business stakeholders.
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum 6 years of business analysis, product analysis, product ownership, or insurance solution consulting experience, including at least 5 years focused specifically on commercial property and casualty insurance.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience supporting commercial P&C policy administration capabilities across the quote-to-bind and policy servicing lifecycle.
- Minimum 2 years of implementation, configuration, product ownership, or operational experience with a packaged policy administration system such as Insurity Policy Decisions, Guidewire PolicyCenter, Duck Creek Policy, Majesco Policy, Sapiens IDITSuite, or a comparable commercial PAS. Experience limited to a proprietary or homegrown PAS does not satisfy this requirement.
- Minimum 3 years of experience defining requirements for commercial insurance products, including coverages, limits, deductibles, classifications, rating inputs, underwriting rules, referrals, forms, transactions, and jurisdictional variations.
- Experience contributing to target-state product design, platform modernization, greenfield solution design, or the creation of reusable product capabilities. The candidate must be able to imagine improved future-state workflows rather than only replicate existing processes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of at least two commercial P&C lines of business, such as Commercial Package, Commercial Property, General Liability, Commercial Auto, Workers Compensation, Inland Marine, Businessowners, or Umbrella/Excess.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working in Agile product delivery teams and actively participating in discovery, backlog refinement, sprint planning, demonstrations, defect triage, and user acceptance testing.
- Strong facilitation and stakeholder-management skills, with demonstrated ability to lead workshops.
- Strong analytical judgment and product thinking, including the ability to separate true insurance requirements from legacy-system constraints and recommend configurable, scalable platform behavior.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex commercial insurance concepts to technical audiences and solution tradeoffs to business stakeholders.
