Blood component preparation
- Separate whole blood into components such as:
- Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC)
- Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)
- Platelet Concentrates
- Cryoprecipitate
- Operate refrigerated centrifuges and plasma freezers.
Immunohematology testing
- ABO and Rh blood grouping.
- Antibody screening and identification.
- Cross-matching.
- Direct and indirect antiglobulin (Coombs) tests.
- Compatibility testing before transfusion.
Transfusion-transmitted infection (TTI) testing
Perform screening for infections such as:
- HIV
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
- Syphilis
- Malaria
- using approved methods such as ELISA or CLIA, depending on the laboratory setup.
Storage and inventory management
- Store blood and components at the correct temperatures.
- Monitor and document refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
- Rotate stock using FIFO/FEFO principles.
- Track expiry dates.
- Maintain adequate inventory for emergencies.
Issue of blood and blood components
- Verify requests from clinicians.
- Confirm patient identification and compatibility.
- Issue appropriate blood products.
- Maintain complete documentation for traceability.
Quality management
- Perform daily quality control of equipment and reagents.
- Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Maintain records required for audits.
- Support compliance with NABL, NABH, and applicable blood bank regulations.
Equipment maintenance
- Operate and maintain:
- Blood bank refrigerators
- Plasma freezers
- Platelet incubators and agitators
- Refrigerated centrifuges
- ELISA/CLIA analyzers
- Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
Documentation
Maintain accurate records for:
- Donor registration
- Blood collection
- Component preparation
- Testing
- Blood issue and discard
- Quality control
- Temperature logs
- Adverse transfusion reactions
Emergency responsibilities
In a super specialty hospital, the technician may be involved in:
- Massive Transfusion Protocols (MTP)
- Emergency release of uncrossmatched blood
- Trauma and accident cases
- Cardiac surgery support
- Organ transplant support
- Obstetric hemorrhage management
Communication
- Coordinate with transfusion medicine specialists, pathologists, clinicians, nurses, and laboratory staff.
- Inform medical officers about incompatible samples, positive antibody screens, or shortages of blood components.
Pay: ₹360,000.00 - ₹600,000.00 per year
