The day-to-day duties of an estimation engineer are broken down into the following key areas:
- Analysis & Blueprint Take-offs: Reviewing technical drawings, blueprints, and proposals to determine the exact project scope and conduct precise material take-offs (MTOs).
- Cost Evaluation & Pricing: Calculating the total cost of direct and indirect expenses, including raw materials, labor man-hours, equipment usage, and subcontractor fees.
- Tendering & Bidding: Compiling technical documents and comprehensive bid packages. Ensuring all estimates comply with industry standards and submitting them on time.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination: Liaising with suppliers to obtain the best market pricing, analyzing vendor quotations, and evaluating bid comparisons.
- Risk Assessment & Value Engineering: Identifying potential cost risks, overruns, or scheduling conflicts. Proposing alternative designs, materials, or methods to optimize costs without compromising quality.
- Cost Tracking & Budgeting: Maintaining internal databases of cost data and updating cost reports throughout the project lifecycle to track variances between estimated and actual expenses.
