A Blood Bank Technician in a hospital ensures the safety, processing, testing, and storage of blood products for patient transfusions. Key responsibilities include performing blood typing (ABO/Rh), antibody screening, cross-matching, maintaining inventory, and adhering to strict regulatory standards (FDA, AABB).
Key Responsibilities
- Testing & Compatibility: Perform blood grouping, antibody screening, and cross-matching to ensure donor-recipient compatibility.
- Processing & Storage: Collect, label, separate, and store blood components (RBCs, plasma, platelets) at specific, monitored temperatures.
- Laboratory Procedures: Conduct screenings for transfusion-transmitted infections (HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Malaria).
- Inventory Control: Manage blood inventory levels and handle donor records with high accuracy.
- Quality Control: Calibrate equipment, maintain cleanliness, and strictly follow biohazard safety protocols.
- Collaboration: Work with nurses and physicians to provide immediate, safe blood products during emergencies.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)
- Experience: Previous experience in a hospital blood bank or laboratory
- Skills: Strong attention to detail, proficiency in Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), and knowledge of immunohematology.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced, high-stakes environment requiring accuracy to prevent transfusion errors.
- Shift work, including nights, weekends, and on-call hours for emergency situations.
- Strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols.
