We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Revenue Accountant to join our growing India-based finance team. Reporting to the Revenue Accounting Manager, this role is critical in ensuring accurate revenue recognition across multiple business units and revenue streams — spanning subscription-based revenue as well as non-subscription consulting and advisory engagements (project-based, milestone-driven, time-and-materials, and fixed-fee contracts).
The ideal candidate brings a strong grounding in ASC 606, sound contract-reading ability, and the discipline to work accurately within a fast-paced, high-growth environment where client engagements are complex, bespoke, and continuously evolving. A global perspective and the ability to collaborate across time zones are essential to supporting our international operations.
- Own and manage the monthly revenue close process, ensuring timely and accurate reporting across all revenue streams.
- Recognise revenue accurately and on time in compliance with ASC 606, covering subscription, project-based, milestone-driven, time-and-materials, and fixed-fee arrangements.
- Apply the five-step ASC 606 model to multi-deliverable and multi-phase engagements, including assessment of over-time vs. point-in-time recognition for advisory services, research deliverables, and data analytics outputs.
- Process and maintain deferred revenue, unbilled receivables, and contract asset/liability schedules for all active engagements.
- Monitor project completion status, milestone achievement, and change orders, ensuring revenue entries reflect the most current engagement status.
- Prepare and post revenue journal entries, accruals, adjustments, and account reconciliations with full supporting documentation.
- Review and interpret consulting contracts, statements of work (SOWs), and master service agreements (MSAs) to identify performance obligations, determine transaction prices, and establish appropriate recognition timing and methodology.
- Extract billing-relevant data including fee structures, payment schedules, milestones, deliverable definitions, and termination clauses.
- Translate contract terms accurately into revenue system configurations, ensuring full consistency between executed agreements and ERP set-up.
- Coordinate with the Deal Desk, Sales, Sales Operations, and Legal teams to clarify contract terms and resolve ambiguities affecting revenue timing or classification.
- Maintain contract-to-revenue traceability records to support internal reviews, management reporting, and external audits.
- Support the month-end and quarter-end close by delivering accurate revenue schedules, reconciliations, and variance commentary within agreed deadlines.
- Prepare and maintain deferred revenue roll-forwards, unbilled AR ageing, and contract asset/liability continuity schedules.
- Reconcile recognised revenue against billing and invoicing records, investigating and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Prepare budget-to-actual and flux analyses, and provide revenue data and supporting schedules to FP&A for forecasting and management reporting.
- Flag revenue-related issues that may impact financial statement accuracy or audit readiness, escalating to the Revenue Accounting Manager promptly.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal controls over revenue, including maker-checker reviews, documentation standards, and approval workflows.
- Maintain complete, well-organised, and readily accessible workpapers to support internal and external audit requests, including international statutory audits.
- Contribute to the development and documentation of revenue accounting SOPs and process guides.
- Support the implementation, optimization, and UAT of ERP enhancements and revenue automation tools as directed.
- Work closely with the Billing and Accounts Receivable teams to ensure revenue entries align with invoicing activity and collections timelines.
- Partner with project management and delivery teams to stay current on engagement progress, scope changes, and milestone completions that affect revenue.
- Collaborate with international teams to ensure consistency in global revenue recognition practices.
- Liaise with the US-based Revenue Accounting Manager and broader Norstella finance team across time zones, providing timely responses and clear communication on all revenue matters.
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; MBA / CA / CPA strongly preferred.
- 3–6 years of relevant experience in revenue accounting, public accounting, general accounting, or corporate finance, ideally with a focus on revenue recognition.
- Experience working in a multi-entity or multi-business-unit environment, preferably within professional services, consulting, or the software / SaaS / technology industry.
- Working knowledge of US GAAP and ASC 606, with hands-on experience applying revenue recognition principles to both subscription-based and non-subscription / project-based arrangements.
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and extract revenue-relevant data from consulting contracts, SOWs, and MSAs.
- Hands-on experience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred) and familiarity with revenue automation tools (e.g., Zone).
- Exposure to international accounting standards (e.g., IFRS) and global revenue recognition practices is highly desirable.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills; able to manage multiple active engagements and competing priorities simultaneously.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with global, cross-functional stakeholders across time zones.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; able to present financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
