Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled, rigorous, and result-oriented Senior Quality Engineer to lead quality assurance and quality control operations at our Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) manufacturing facility.
In this role, you will be responsible for enforcing strict product standards, establishing robust QA/QC protocols, ensuring material traceability, and driving zero-defect manufacturing. You will oversee quality checkpoints across all stages of fabrication—from raw material receipt through fit-up, welding, blast cleaning, painting, and final dispatch—while leading root cause analyses, handling customer/third-party audits, and upholding ISO 9001 and international structural steel standards (AWS D1.1, IS 2062, IS 800).
Key Responsibilities & Performance Expectations1. Quality System Management & Operational Governance
- Establish, implement, and enforce standardized Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) procedures, Inspection and Test Plans (ITP), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across the manufacturing line.
- Lead internal audits to ensure compliance with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems (QMS).
- Act as the main point of contact for customer inspections, third-party inspection agencies (TPIA), and statutory auditing bodies.
2. In-Process Fabrication & Welding Quality Control
- Inspect structural steel members (Built-up sections, Hot-rolled sections, Cold-formed Z/C purlins, Sheeting) against approved shop drawings and tolerances.
- Perform structural fit-up, dimensional, straightness, camber, and squareness checks using calibrated measuring tools.
- Monitor welding operations for adherence to approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications) and PQR (Procedure Qualification Records) in accordance with AWS D1.1 / IS 9595.
- Qualify welders and maintain welder performance records.
- Oversee and evaluate Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods including Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
3. Material Inspection, Surface Preparation & Coating
- Conduct receiving inspections on incoming raw materials (Plates, Coils, Fasteners, Electrodes, Paints) to verify Mill Test Certificates (MTCs), heat numbers, chemical composition, and physical properties.
- Supervise surface preparation (Grit/Shot Blasting) to ensure compliance with surface profile standards (e.g., Sa 2.5).
- Inspect paint application, verifying Dry Film Thickness (DFT), adhesion tests, and surface finish quality against client specifications.
4. Defect Prevention, CAPA & Continuous Improvement
- Drive Root Cause Analysis (RCA) using tools like 8D, 5 Why, or Fishbone diagrams for recurring defects or non-conformances.
- Issue and track Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), ensuring implementation of effective Corrective Actions and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
- Champion Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, and 5S methodologies on the shop floor to improve process efficiency and decrease scrap rates.
5. Documentation, Traceability & Team Leadership
- Maintain total material traceability from raw steel plates to final finished components.
- Compile and manage Quality Dossiers, Dispatch Inspection Reports, Manufacturer's Data Reports (MDR), and Test Certificates.
- Mentor and manage junior inspectors and technicians, fostering a culture of zero-tolerance for quality compromises.
- Partner with Production, Design, and Project Execution teams to eliminate manufacturing bottlenecks and address client concerns proactively.
Eligibility Criteria & Experience
- Education: B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or Metallurgy.
- Experience: 5 to 10 years of core QA/QC experience in PEB Manufacturing, Heavy Structural Steel Fabrication, or Industrial Steel Structures.
- Standards Expertise: In-depth knowledge of AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code – Steel), IS 2062, IS 800, IS 808, MBMA guidelines, and ISO 9001 standards.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex structural shop drawings, single-line diagrams, and bill of materials (BOM).
- Hands-on proficiency with precision measuring instruments (vernier calipers, micrometers, ultrasonic thickness gauges, DFT meters, profile gauges).
Preferred Certifications & Skills
- NDT Qualifications: NDT Level II certification in Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) as per SNT-TC-1A.
- Welding Inspector Certification: CWI (AWS) or CSWIP 3.1 certification is highly desirable.
- Software Competency: Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiar with ERP systems (SAP/Oracle) for quality modules.
Key Competencies
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving mindset.
- Strong leadership, assertiveness, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and client interactions.
- Ability to work under tight delivery schedules without compromising on quality or safety.
