Position: CSSD Technician
Department: Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD)
Location: Dr. Rane Hospital Pvt. Ltd., Chembur, Mumbai
Reports To: CSSD In-charge / OT Manager / Nursing Superintendent
Job Summary
The CSSD Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments, medical devices, and sterile supplies. The technician ensures compliance with NABH standards, infection prevention protocols, and hospital policies to support safe patient care.
Key Responsibilities1. Instrument Decontamination & Cleaning
- Receive used instruments from OT, Cath Lab, ICU, Wards, and other departments.
- Segregate instruments according to sterilization requirements.
- Perform manual cleaning and operate ultrasonic cleaners/washer disinfectors.
- Ensure complete removal of blood, tissue, and contaminants before sterilization.
2. Inspection & Assembly
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and damage.
- Lubricate instruments where required.
- Assemble surgical sets according to standard tray lists.
- Report damaged or missing instruments to the CSSD In-charge.
3. Sterilization
- Operate autoclaves, ETO sterilizers, plasma sterilizers, and other CSSD equipment.
- Select appropriate sterilization methods based on instrument type.
- Monitor sterilization cycles and ensure all parameters are achieved.
- Leak Test, Chemical Indicator, and Biological Indicator monitoring as per protocol.
- Ensure traceability of sterilization loads.
4. Packing & Storage
- Pack instruments using approved sterilization wraps and containers.
- Label packs with sterilization date, batch number, expiry date, and operator details.
- Store sterile items according to first-expiry-first-out (FEFO) principles.
- Maintain sterile storage conditions.
5. Distribution
- Supply sterile instruments and consumables to OT, Cath Lab, ICU, Wards, Emergency, and OPD.
- Ensure timely availability of sterile supplies for emergency procedures.
- Maintain issue and return records.
6. Documentation
- Maintain sterilization registers and equipment logbooks.
- Record biological and chemical indicator results.
- Maintain instrument inventory and stock records.
- Document equipment breakdowns and maintenance activities.
- Ensure complete traceability of sterilized instrument sets.
7. Infection Prevention & Safety
- Follow hospital infection prevention and control policies.
- Adhere to biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Use appropriate PPE while handling contaminated instruments.
- Ensure clean and dirty areas remain strictly segregated.
- Report incidents, accidents, and non-conformities immediately.
8. Equipment Maintenance
- Perform routine cleaning and care of CSSD equipment.
- Report equipment malfunction promptly.
- Coordinate with the Biomedical Engineering Department for preventive maintenance and repairs.
9. Quality & NABH Compliance
- Follow NABH standards and hospital SOPs.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and internal audits.
- Maintain confidentiality and patient safety at all times.
- Attend mandatory departmental and hospital training programs.
Educational Qualification
- 10+2 (Science) preferred.
- Diploma/Certificate in CSSD Technology or Operation Theatre Technology.
- Certification in Sterilization Techniques is desirable.
Experience
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a hospital CSSD.
- Experience in an NABH-accredited hospital preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control practices.
- Understanding of surgical instruments and medical devices.
- Operation of Autoclave, ETO, Plasma Sterilizer, and Washer Disinfector.
- Knowledge of biological and chemical indicator testing.
- Documentation and record-keeping skills.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Good communication and teamwork.
- Attention to detail and time management.

- 100% compliance with sterilization protocols.
- Zero sterilization-related adverse events.
- Timely availability of sterile instrument sets.
- Accuracy of sterilization documentation and traceability.
- Compliance with biological and chemical indicator testing schedules.
- Minimal instrument damage due to improper handling.
- Compliance with infection control and NABH standards.
- Timely reporting of equipment breakdowns and corrective actions.
Working Conditions
- Rotational shifts, including weekends, nights, and public holidays.
- Requires prolonged standing, lifting instrument trays, and adherence to strict infection control practices.
- Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Authority
- Operate CSSD equipment as per hospital SOPs.
- Reject improperly cleaned or damaged instruments before sterilization.
- Report process deviations or equipment failures to the CSSD In-charge immediately.
